New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

thanks Aelith for a clear reply...I think, I would study a 2yr health-related course there, so I can nominate RN as my profession which is 60 points...but still I need to do BP in order for me to become an RN...

do you think this is a wise path:

1)study (health related course) for 2 yrs

2)do BP to be RN

3)apply for ANMC Assessment

4)if +, apply for Graduate Skilled Visa

5)Work for at least 1yr

6)Apply for PR subclass 885:yeah::D:lol2:

I suggest that your choice in Number 1 can be used to nominate RN or another occupation with a 50-60 points in SOL to be in the safe side. Everything else seems good :) I am guessing you are taking the safest pathway because you are going for the Graduate Skilled Visa first instead of the direct PR status :)

Good luck dear!

PS. Also, you might want to retake your IELTS for additional points (25 points if all bands are at least 7.0).

Tnx aelith for the info...

I only have 6 months of training experience. What state would accept my training experience? If I'm not mistaken I read from earlier post that its either queensland or victoria.

Im also concerned of how much money will I need to all this process, including the application and bridging program until I can finally work as a nurse?

Will I be able to find a part time job in australia/ NZ while this process is on going? And will it suffice for all my expenses?

Tnx a lot.. Sorry for having too many questions and if this has been answered earlier.

You can apply to any state because currently, they don't require experience yet - the BP providers do. But the popular choice for those with limited experience is Queensland, NSW and Victoria. Qld has the cheapest program, and NSW and some of Vic's BP providers being the most expensive. You might also want to take into consideration the bulk of nurses applying in those states because it directly affects the length of the assessment process.

Money will depend on the tuition of the Bridging program you'll be enrolling at and the state where you'll be staying. But roughly around 4-5k will be alloted on living expenses and airfare alone which is good for 3 months. Visa will not cost much as well.

Depending on what visa subclass you'll be holding whilst in Australia, you may or may not be permitted to work. To be specific, you can work only if you hold student visa and not with a 456 or a 676 visa. The visa you'll be applying for will not be just your choice, but that of the Bridging program providers.

If you will be applying for a student visa, you will be allowed to work for 20 hours per week. It will help pay off some bills, transportation expenses and groceries.

Hope that helps a bit :)

I've been following this thread for a couple of days now and I must say, Aelith, you're a blessing!

Very informative, indeed.

hi. i'm just new here. i'm a registered nurse from the philippines. i graduated two years ago and until now i don't have a job. i was hoping that somebody can give me the basic information regarding the bridging course and the fast track in going to australia and work as a nurse. i wanted to know how much it would cost me all in all (application fee, visa, course, cost of living, transportation, etc.). also, which is cheaper and better? the consultancy firm that i've asked told me that it would cost me around 5 hundred thousand to 1 million pesos, depending on the option i would choose so that i could go to asutralia under the fast track course. so, can you please help me because it is quite a lot of money. what are the requirements for the application? if you could suggest and firm that could help me i would really appreciate it. and if you could give me the step by step procedure of applying and what is the best school for this course. if i would process my papers on my own, would it be difficult for me to find a job? cause that is also my concern, i'm scared that if i would do everything on my own it would be hard for me to find a job and process my papers.

i would also like to ask the following questions::confused:

what is it like? the class and the clinical set up?

what do they mean by they will assess you against australian competencies?

what kind of skills and competencies are you supposed to show/know/demonstrate?

advance level? entry level?

what is the breakdown of the schedule for the said courses?

is there an exam that i have to pass before i can be registered nurse and work?

what if i fail the course? what would happen?

what responsibilities and assignments are usually given to you in the bridging course..particularly in the clinical settings?

how long does the fast track or bridging course take? and the time from finishing it up to having a job as a nurse.

what grade in ielts do i need?

how much is the "show money" needed?

i can't think of anymore questions. i would just post it if ever i have some questions. i hope that someone can enlighten me and answer my questions... i apologize if i have many questions...

thanks in advance... :thankya::rcgtku:

Welcome to the thread Ciaren and thank you for the kind words :)

Everyone in this thread have been most helpful, sharing all information they know, which is why this thread is still alive. I agree too with you that newcomers should really take their time and read back because they will learn a lot from the previous posts - different options and step by step process plus some added tips.

i would also like to ask the following questions::confused:

what is it like? the class and the clinical set up?

what do they mean by they will assess you against australian competencies?

just like philippines has its own set of competencies, australia has its own standard of practise and competencies which they require each nurse graduate should possess. to check whether we meet such competencies, we will then be required to undergo an assessment program - also known as the bridging program.

what kind of skills and competencies are you supposed to show/know/demonstrate?

advance level? entry level?

the full list of competencies can be found in anmc's website and in all nursing board's website of each state. in general, they only require competencies which are possessed by newly graduate australian nurse.

what is the breakdown of the schedule for the said courses?

schedule will depend on the bridging program providers.

is there an exam that i have to pass before i can be registered nurse and work?

if you are referring to the nursing licensure exam we have in the philippines, australia does not have one. however, there is one state that is offering a pathway which will require you to take a short exam - qnc's cas; challenge test.

what if i fail the course? what would happen?

should you fail the bridging program, you will not be registered. you have two options after: re-apply and start over or enroll in a pre-registration program (e.g. study bachelor of nursing for 2 years).

what responsibilities and assignments are usually given to you in the bridging course..particularly in the clinical settings?

how long does the fast track or bridging course take? and the time from finishing it up to having a job as a nurse.

what grade in ielts do i need?

there is really no fast track option. i think the agency told you that qnc has the fast track option, correct? that is not really the case. it seems like the challenge test pathway is fast only because the exams for part a & b will only take you 2 days to finish. however, the assessment process plus the consequences if you do fail the exam which will require you to take the education modules too, will just make it similar to other bridging programs. in general, it will still take many months for you to finish everything.

ielts requirement is 7.0 minimum in all bands. currently, some states still have the old requirement which is 7.0 in speaking/writing and 6.5 in reading/listening with obs of 7.0. however, i would suggest you aim for 7.0 because this will be adapted too by other states - it is just a matter of time. qld, nsw, vic requires 7.0 in all bands.

how much is the "show money" needed?

show money to comply with the financial requirement for visa processing will depend on what visa you are going to apply for. also, it will depend on whether you have a family or not as this would require you to show how you can financially support everyone. for a 456/676 visa, 4k-5k aud i think should be enough for a single applicant.

i can’t think of anymore questions. i would just post it if ever i have some questions. i hope that someone can enlighten me and answer my questions... i apologize if i have many questions...

thanks in advance... :thankya::rcgtku:

hello myeahne :)

welcome to the thread! first, i would suggest, that if you do have time, please try to read all the posts starting page 3 i think. you'll find all information regarding the different options you have to go to australia and the in-depth discussion on all of those choices.

but i have answered some of your questions briefly just so you'll have something to ponder on.

ps. for you to be able to choose wisely where to apply, you will have to know the ins and outs of all state's bridging programs. almost all of the nurses who posts here are those with limited or no experience at all. most of them did it on their own.

hi aelith... thank you so much for your help.. i'm reading the previous threads right now so that i would have an idea... there were a lot of options to choose from and im confused :thnkg:.. but, thanks for your help. i really appreciate it... :rcgtku:

Don't worry... take your time to read everything :)

I'm sure you'll be able to decide once you finish the thread or at least you'll have a better idea of the options you have. :)

hi.. i have attended a seminar from one of the consultancy firms in the Philippines.. they told me about the fast track which has two options. the first one is the CAS (you would take first the Part A but if you fail the part A you have to study the modules). next is the ion course which is a new one and more expensive than CAS... have you heard bout it? but this one is not explained to us well, so if someone can give me more info about it i would appreciate it...

I still dont know if i should take the Bridging program or the CAS program on my own or get the help of the consultancy firm. pls send me the names of the consultancy firm that could assit me... or just sen a PM to me...

if ever that i would do the CAS program on my own, where would i get the review materials? can i take the written exams here in the Phil? i know that i have to go to Aus just to have the clinical.

i am still undecided what state should i apply to.. i don't have any work experience... huhuhuh

thanks!!!
