New grad Filipino nurse wanting to work in Australia/New Zealand

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone, please help me.

I graduated last march 2007 here in the Philippines and I have my license here already.

Because of oversupply of nurses here, it's too difficult to find a job.

That's why I'm looking forward to working in Australia or New Zealand.

However, I'm confused. Esp about Australia.

I already have my bachelors degree here.

When I go there in Aus to work as RN, must I take a diploma in nursing first? can I work while studying?

After obtaining my diploma there, am I already a registered nurse?

Thank you!

hi dudzy...

i realized Heildelberg is too far from where i am supposed to live so i guess i really have to rent a room...Please keep in touch as i might be consulting you with some things....

if ETEA turns out good, then i'd shoot for it in October......

i am also considering Deakin in January 2010 --- well only because i can pay the tuition by credit card but if the funds i am expecting comes by July, i will go for ETEA although i'll be watching out for your review, hhahaha...anyway, thank you...wishing you all the best....

University of Ballarat offers July 23 intake but the deadline for the applications i think is May 22.. Yeah, i dont know what will happen for me there,hehehehe.. il keep you posted,hahaha..

Even prior the actual issuance of your PRC license ID, the PRC can already fill up the Verification form and send it to the addressed nursing board. The crucial thing for you to monitor is when and if the PRC has already assigned you a license number (which is done prior actual issuance of PRC ID)..

Therefore, need not weight for 5-6 months.. Of course, im just addressing on your concern about that filling up of the form by PRC for CRNBC..

Hope that helps.. Good luck..

Hi Viamarie:

Thanks so much for your posts!

I am currently applying for CRNBC(canadian Registration nurses BC). The thing is, they also need my license verification which i filed last march 8 or 9, 2009 in PRC Cebu. (i was a Nov NLE 2008 passer) So of course when i applied for registration, much to my dismay (literally, my jaw dropped) they told me that i can get my license in 5-6 months. the License is a requirement for the "license verification form" (it's a 1-page form) that CRNBC has that must be filled up by PRC officials. After which , the PRC official will directly send it to CRNBC in Canada. T

Here lies my problem, 5-6 months for license to be release. in other words that form will be filled up after the 5-6 months? I feel, theres too much waste of my time ... You did mention that if one has the extra resources, do this license verifcation in manila. Is it appliable to my case? I don't mean the "board exam passer certification" with the ratings etc... Did you have such "license verification form" also from the Australian Nurses assoc. etc? Im just looking at all possibilities here to make the process faster...Youre right, smaller provinces takes sooooo much longer...

Thanks again and hope to hear from you soon.

Cheers!:specs:

@ cvic

i am still unable to send private messages, maybe i need to post more...anyway, the NBV does not require as much documents as in the other states...you need : your diploma, TOR, passport or birth cert, then the verification of registration or this can also be the cert of good standing sent by PRC to NBV. you need to request this...

the documents are only certified true copy. you can have the diploma and TOR certified by the school registrar.

hi! who among you here have applied for registration in queensland? do they require post-licensure experience? because i don't have one! hehehe... can you please share to me the steps and timeline of your application? i would greatly appreciate it. thank you very much and god bless! one more thing, if they find you eligible, would they require you to undergo a bridging program? and then? ... hope to hear from anybody soon!

hi lana,

on a general perspectiver, any state in australia always require a bridging program for overseas nurses especially without post registration experience...

as to queensland, im not sure....but there are a lot of info in this thread that you can read back...

i recommend you read it even if it seems too long as it's really informational...that's what i did when i first started...i read through everything first.

Thanks Aelith!

I don't have any work experience as a nurse. I just put in the QNC application kit where they ask for work experience as newly grad. If you're a foreign trained nurse (except those coming from the UK system) with or without experience, you 'll have to go through the bridging program before the QNC recognize your qualifications. But it would really help a lot if you have some clinical experience because when you do the clinical placement, the patients and the OZ nurses expects that you know what you're doing. Because part of the clinical skills you have to show you are competent is delegating activities to enrolled nurses, patient support assistants or assistant in nursing as well as the orderlies and also how to work with other medical personnel like physiotherapists. So all of them will ask you questions with regards to the patient/s you're looking after, they wil not ask your preceptor, your preceptor will only intervene if he thinks what you suggested is not right. It's like you're practising as an RN already. Going on duty is very different from what we do here. You have a preceptor so it means 1:1 teaching, and this preceptor will always challenge your decision, will always be asking for the rationale on your actions. And these things might be quite daunting to a non-experienced nurse. But if you have a solid experience while doing your duties in school, then it wouldn't be that difficult even if you're a newly graduate nurse. But to those who have at least 2 years work experience especially in a special areas like ICU, CCU, High dependency unit then peanuts or chicken lang placement:D

I'm already starting to process my 457 visa, before I left for the Phils. I applied to the hospital where i did my placement and they gave me a job and will sponsor me for my visa. So hopefully I'll be back 1st quarter of 2009 in AUS, in Bundaberg QLD. :yeah:

I am with the same program, i just submitted my application for QNC last Feb 09, I just received the confirmation of receipt but no result yet. Your posts here are not only serve as motivation but a guide... Thanks for the generosity. I'm sure a lot of RNs reading your posts are learning well and have at least idea and expectations with this undertaking. Keep it :D:redbeatheup...

i read this in another thread here are allnurses:

i have been following the posts of the new graduates in the us who are having great difficulty finding a job.

many are moving states in an effort to find a job.

i hoped it wouldn't happen here, but now we are seeing it.

the effect of the economy downturn is starting to hit the healthcare sector here in australia.

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...01-662,00.html

i believe that there are less permanent full time/part time positions being advertised and more casual/temp positions being advertised than ever before.

has the economic downturn affected your employment opportunities?

They currently don't require any post-graduate experience. They will consider your Clinical placements when you were still studying as the basis for your competency. However, you should expect that you will undergo their CAS (competency Assessment program). If you successfully pass this program, you will then be eligible to register as a Queensland Nurse.

A lot of information has been discussed about CAS and the whole process from beginning till work visas. If you have the time, I suggest you read back (starting page 3 of this thread) for you to have all the information you might need. Should you need any information or clarification, don't hesitate to reply to this thread. :)

thanks for the link you posted. :) but i think the article pertains to "enrolled nurses (en)" and not registered nurses (rn).

thank you for your reply chabeli! i really don't have time to read all the posts here so i did a research myself and somehow i kinda have this idea already on how to go about the process. anyway, do you know anybody who was educated here in the philippines and was not required to undergo a competency assessment service? from what school or university?
