A few weeks ago, ohiobobcat posted a topic about giving his first epi-pen and I was just wondering: what are some other firsts for the nurses out here? What have you never done before? (in terms of nursing practice. I don't want to hear that you've never skinny-dipped. That's a topic for another day)
Or, what's something you recently were exposed to for the first time in your career? I'm curious to know which experiences some of us have yet to face at work.
Nothing too juicy. Kiddo has missed almost 30 days of school, does so every year apparently. Went to talk with parent about it, she was not concerned at all it seems. She blamed it on him getting sick at school. The odd thing is...I have NEVER had this kid in my office. Not once.
What the french toast. I don't get these parents sometimes. I really don't.
I gave Methylene Blue IV push for the first time last week. 282 mg. It is one crazy drug… The other ICU nurses said they have never seen it given! It helps wean a patient off vasopressors.
We used it in OR many years ago - I forget why
Just looked up uses. it's used to stain certain body parts during surgery, but don't recall which specialties used it.
Also treats methemglobanemia.
This month I have made my first 2 calls to CPS. Saddest and hardest two calls I have ever had to make. I already know that the first call has gotten results and a child's life will hopefully be better now. Praying that this call today will benefit another child in trouble. Going to be a long weekend of worry about this little darling.
I've never participated in a successful code. However, since most of those codes werepatients like the 92 y.o. vent dependent LOL with end stage everything and the granddaughter who calls the floor to ask when Nana will get better because she watches her 4 young kids for free and child care is sooo expensive that she doesn't even have enough money to go bar hopping more than once a week...
I guess it depends on your definition of "successful."

I remember the first time I did this I was just a few weeks in to orientation with my job, and had to report a situation that was potentially very bad, but I did not have enough information to be sure. Agonized over it before and after I called, but my concerns were warranted.
I did my first rectal exam last week! Not sure how glad I am to cross that off my Never Have I Ever list lol. And then oddly had to do another one the very next day. I will probably go another 10 years before I have to do it again.
Never Have I Ever given a ventrogluteal injection and I am scared to try!
