Hi there!
I am looking for any info on some less competitive NP schools that I can do from VA, either in person or online. I applied to George Mason's FNP program in 2003 & was accepted, but couldn't attend b/c of family issues that arose. I'm heartbroken now as I've applied to UVA's FNP program (got waitlisted Spring '11, they only accepted 3 out of 25 applicants), and Georgetown's new online only FNP program (got denied, said they accept only applicants w/cumulative GPA of 3.7 or better). I wonder if by applying to just these 2 schools I am trying to get into the most competitive programs around here?? I'm not interested in going to a school b/c the name, I just really, really want to finally fulfill my dream of being an NP. So, please, if you know of any school that is not so uber-competitive to get into, I'd LOVE the info. I'm also not set on becoming a FNP, if that track seems to be the reason things are so competitive now, I would love to practice as a Adult NP instead. I just want to finally realize my dream of NP and start a program soon!!!!!!!!!!
thx!!!

THank you all. Can u tell me if the schools u guys PM'd were specifically for the Np program, or just a MSN? I cant PM yet, but if u pm your email address I can write that way. Thx!
It is a MSN-FNP program, 3 years. They also have ANP, CNS, and education.

Hi, I am not sure what area of VA you are in but I know that Radford University has several NP programs. I think they are still competitive but maybe not as much as UVA or Georgetown?

Family is by far the most competitive. I am going to attend USA with online. The adult NP program is less competitive and also online.

I can't help with least competitive, but I can tell you in this economic climate, private schools are not getting as many apps as say a state university. Where I live, there are 2 close to me and they both are about $50 more per credit hour. Worth it to me. I am applying at 3 private and 1 state university in my area.

I live in VA and did the USA (University of South AL) program (FNP) as mentioned above. I live in the Hampton Roads area. Sometimes finding a clinical rotation was a bit difficult as there are several NP programs and a PA program in the area and they have 'standing' contracts with some facilities and had already committed to their students first. Also one of the health systems would not approve the schools contract and vice versa.
With that said, I did manage to find good preceptors/clinical rotations. And if it weren't for the online option, I would not have been able to earn my MSN-FNP with the schedules our family maintains.

Look at Frontier. They are based in Hyden, KY, require 2-3 campus visits during the program. Their cutoff for GPA is 2.7, but if its above a 3.0 they do not require the GRE. I can't say they are not competitive though because people do get waitlisted and denied, but have found their admission requirements to be reasonable. Good luck
