Need A & P!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am in my 3rd semester of pre-req's and each semester I have been trying to register for an A&P I class. This last attempt I made sure I got up bright and early on the day of registration (registration began at 7:30 am, and I was up with fingers poised on the computer keys at 7:01), only to be met with some severe technical glitches with the online registration process. I won't even go into it but suffice to say by the time I was finally able to log-in all the A & P classes were snatched up. We're talking a matter of an hour here! I was so angry but I realized that complaining to the college would be a waste of time. The crazy thing about this is that the college only offers 5 A&P I classes per term yet there were a total of 12 A&P II classes. WTF?

Most of my other classes have been taken care of (courtesy of a previous degree), but without that A&P I I'm stuck here. I'm taking fluff courses right now just so I can stay enrolled in the college while I wait my turn to vie for one of those 5 classes again next fall. Grrrr...:angryfire

What are my options? Are there online possiblities here? Normally I wouldn't worry so much but I've waited 25 years to start nursing school. I've been at home raising my family and am now finally able to realize my dream of becomming a nurse but if this keeps up I'll be 60 years old by the time I graduate. I'm 47 now!

I'm sorry to sound so whiney and I do realize that I'm probably not alone but what the heck does a girl have to do to take an A&P class? LOL!

Thanks for letting me vent. Sigh.

I had a similar situation, only my school gives out registration appointments, I kept getting January appointments for spring semester when they would be first handed out in November. It was the same situation where the spots were all filled up with in a couple hours so have a date 3 months out was useless. I finally petitioned to the school explaining the situation. I was a transfer student (20 years later lol). They give out dates on a seniority basis, based on how many credits you had taken, I was only doing one at a time so I got a late date. They very kindly fixed my date the next time and I have had first day registration ever since. So you should talk to the school they understand (usually) special circumstances. Also I highly recomend waitlisting, many people drop out right away when they find out the shear amount of work, most of my classes took several extra people expecting many to drop.

good luck.

Check and see if your school has a wait-list for these classes and get on it NOW. It's surprising how many people register and then withdraw before the class even begins, so be waiting in the wings to take their place.

I second the suggestion of wait listing the class. I registered for this spring semester back in September, and had to wait list my ANP class, but I made it in :)

Did you transfer those units in to the CC?

Every college and university that I've attended (total of 5, all Cali public schools) let upperclassmen, grad students, and post-baccalaureate students register first since there are very few specific classes that they need.

I took A&P 1 & 2 online through edukan.org, it was a great experience and I would recommend them. But.... I'm having to take them again because the program I am applying to won't accept the online labs. So check your program's requirements and see if they will accept the online classes.

One more thought on online vs. in person classes: I think in person classes are MUCH easier then online. A&P was do-able through edukan but I was basically teaching myself the stuff and i took me a lot longer to get through all the material. It's nice to have an actual professor stand up in front of you and explain things.

Good luck! I hope you get it worked out!

Does your school offer phone registration too? I have never been able to utilize my school's online registration, the site always bogs down immediately when the clock hit's midnight. I have much better luck using the phone to get through and get the classes I need. Anyway, definately get on a waitlist, I have gotten into classes that way when I needed a class that filled too fast.

I can sympathize. Classes get filled up pretty quick. A lot of times people drop during drop/add which I think is the first week of school so you would have to watch carefully.Thats what I did this semester. Got the last seat in AP 2 Lab!! Another option is talking to the professor. They have a lot of pull. I went to the head of the science department & he had me speak to the professor about allowing me to register for Chem, so I did and he requested his superior to add me even though the class was full.

You just have to talk to someone who cares. You might even try the Nursing School advisor's. They have also helped me in the past as well.

Good luck to you!

I know exactly what you are talking about:crash_com!!! I have to take A&P before I can take the second semester of my local CC LVN program-not in yet just wanted to get this class out of the way!!! come to find out there is only one Lecture class and 3 labs and I was sweating bullets to get in but i was lucky and got in!!! Community colleges should offer equal A&P 1 and A&P II, I mean come on there is a demand for these classes and for more LVN programs too!!! I want to start nursisng school now but unforutnately I have to hope and pray that alot of peopple will drop out and I can get into Fall 2008 but if not-and more likley-I will start my CC said for sure in Fall 2009:wtosts::dancgrp:!!! If I don't get in I will cry!!! I will just have to wait until Fall 2009 and I will go for my CNA and get some experience until i start, sorry for getting off topic a littleand I am so sorry for the long post. I wish you luck and I hope you get in soon, keep us posted ok!!!

just wanted to let you know that I too had troubles getting into A&P! I strongly suggest that you get on the waiting list and see if there are any other community colleges that offer it in your area. I did NOT get in the first try, but I was lucky- there were SO many people that didn't get in to the 2nd place I applied that they started another class! so hopefully something like that will happen in your situation.

Also before the day you apply go to the college and check the time and make sure that you know all the info to avoid any avoidable problems when you do try to apply!

good luck!

Thank you all so much for your quick responses and excellent advice. I really do appreciate it. I've made an appointment to speak with my academic advisor about my options, and whether or not there is someone who can at least steer me in the right direction.

I would love to be put on a waitlist for this class but unfortunately they don't have one. This class is strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis, and basically if you aren't able to muddle through the registration process you are SOL.

But I'm not giving up! I've waited too long to do this and I'm not going to lie down and be passed over. lol :)

One other suggestion: Go speak to the professors now and stay in touch throughout the semester. You may find that helpful in getting a slot next semester.

I actually had an anatomy teacher call me at the start of this fall semester and tell me that he was holding a spot for me since he knew that I was provisionally admitted to nursing school dependent on completing my prerequisites.
