  1. I am an RN that has accepted a position as an MBSCR. I have one surgery center. I have tried to research salary for this position, but I cannot find it anywhere. Even just a round about or a salary range would be nice. Working about 12-15 hours/week. Its a work from home position. Can anyone provide a range with the details I've given? Thank you so much in advance!
  2. Direct loans is awful. I had the hardest time just logging in to pay. You would think they would they would make it easy, like everyone else so they can get paid. Its ridiculous & frustrating, but not sure there is anything that can be done. That's how government agencies are- TERRIBLE.
  3. I am so sorry to hear this. I always loved reading her posts. She had so much knowledge & it was wonderful that she shared it. I Learned so much from her.
  4. "That's insane! How are you juggling the 12 hours shifts and classes at the same time? I'm going to just be starting my ADN and was thinking about doing the same thing.
  5. "That's insane! How are you juggling the 12 hours shifts and classes at the same time? I'm going to just be starting my ADN and was thinking about doing the same thing." I started working as a tech in my 3rd semester. I was nervous, but it ended up being fine. I work two 12 hour shifts a week now. A lot of students work, but I would say if you don't have to, don't. Some people have to work. Its doable to juggle both.
  6. Yeah, I saw that thread, but it didn't help me. I appreciate it though. Thanks. I actually figured it out though. You have to subtract however many hours you missed from the 8 hours to figure out how much time you have to give the 1st 1/2 of the fluid. :) Hope that helps someone :)
  7. I almost get this but am having an issue with the timing- which is probably the easiest part :) I know that you calculate from the time the pt. was burned, so, if my pt. was burned at 1 am and admit was at 8 am, does that mean that the fluid has to be administered in 1 hour? (45% TBSA, 80 kg). I just don't see how you would put 7200 mL in 1 hour in a person. Please let me know. Thanks :)
  8. I was alternate #50 last August & I got in. Just offering some hope :) Also, the students who got in probably had Micro completed already. If they all have it & you don't I was told that bumps you back. You can get in without it, but they admit those with it first. Good luck to you!!!!
  9. Hello all! Thank you for all of the responses! Well, it sounds like working in a Peds hospital will be doable, as long as I structure my training around it...which I'd do b/c I know that's where I want to work. Thing is, I'd be working in Southern California; San Diego. Do you think that's a tough market? A few of you guys said Peds is a specialty that a lot of people want to work in...not according to the hiring mang at the SD hosp I talked to. She said, "...Peds is always hard to fill b/c not a lot of people want to work around kids all day." I'm assuming you guys disagree with that statement? Also, I've heard a lot about new grads not being able to find jobs. I don't want to change careers, work my butt off in school and not be able to find a job. I know I'd improve my job opportunities by moving but I don't want leave San Diego. Clearly, who would? So, moving is not an option... So, am I drastically limiting my options when I said I only want to work in San Diego and for a childen's hospital? I'm thinking no...as long as I work at a children's hospital during school, volunteer and do anything I can think of that would boost my resume. Agree or disagree? Oh! And someone else mentioned that people are pretty much lining up to work the night shift b/c it pays more? I thought people were lining up to work the day shift? I'd only work the night shift if they made me. With that said, do you think it's unrealistic to go into nursing only wanting to work the day shift? I don't care how much money I can make working nights; I'm not interested. *Yes, I know I have a lot of stipulations :chuckle I'm not a Nurse-yet, but I am doing my peds clinical this semester & I am very excited because this is a great area of interest..........then, I find out that we only get 2 weeks (4 total clinical days) in peds. They used to do 5 weeks, but we were told that this was the only children's hospital in pinellas & they had to make room for other schools. It is very disappointing to say the least. I love the specialties, but they just don't let us get enough of any of it. I also applied as a tech in Tampa at the peds hospital. I got offered a job on an adult med-surg floor. I figured its experience & at least I'm in because they have a great children's hospital. We do management experience our last semester & we can go to the children's hospital, but there are only 2 spots or something crazy so you can imagine how competetive that is. Just wanted to say that you really can't specialize until you are an RN- at my school anyway. They want you to have med-surg ALOT, which I understand b/c you will be tested on NCLEX in this area more than any other. I love it anyway & will get where I want to be eventually :) Good luck to you!
  10. My grandmother had been in & out of a rehab center for a while; in pain for as long as I can remember. My grandfather would visit when he could. Then, my grandmother was admitted to the hospital.....not shortly after, my grandfather was admitted to the same hospital, same floor. After sometime we decided it was best to take her to see him, which we did; he was going down hill pretty fast & we expected he would not make it much longer. We got a call at 3 am a few days later- my grandmother had a heart attack. The next day, we got a call that my grandfather had also passed. They had been married for 60 years. Still gets me choked up because it was just in November, but wanted to share.
  11. what session are you an alternate for? are all of your pre-req's completed now that you have been chosen as an alternate or are you still lacking some? thanks for all the info also. i have a 3.8, but lacking micro, so i'll prob have to wait until fall :-( i'm an alternate for starting this fall, 2009, and yes...i've finished all pre-req's...to be competitive for a direct seat, you'll need to finish micro. you may be able to get in via eayl though, but when i've interviewed for these positions, the first question they asked is if i've completed all my pre-req's. micro's not so hard, just make sure you study your pants off for the first exam...i mean, like crazy...that's the tough one...if you don't do well on it, take the 'w', if you nail it, you're good to go, just keep studying. good luck! just wanted to tell you that when i applied my alternate # was 50 and i got in. thought there was no hope, but 2 weeks before the semester started, i got the call. good luck to you!
  12. Many people also use this......... Let me give you some advise. Its advice people!!! Makes me nuts.
  13. I feel that prestige plays an enormous role in the work that we do every day. There are many individuals that spent countless hours in school--i.e., physicians, nurse practioners, CRNAs, etc. and they deserve the respect they receive. These folks are not your run-of-the-mill LPNs or two-year RNs. People recognize this and the prestige is only one of the many rewards for being at the top of your profession. And, this is not a form of hubris since those who work hard at what they do are typically rewarded, and their patients are rewarded as well for being under the care of a committed, educated practitioner. In my opinion, this is a bit offensive to the Nursing profession. Masters degree or not, you are a Nurse. I don't see why you would refer to a Nurse as "run of the mill" simply because they are not CRNA's- this is after all the profession you are in. I don't want you to think I that I don't know that becoming a CRNA is not a great accomplishment because it definitely is, but in my opinion, so is making it to the position of an RN, which is where you started. After you spent all that time to become an RN, someone said to you "you're just run of the mill" I would think that would be infuriating because you did spent countless hours to get there. You also put yourslef in the same rank as a physician- sorry, but not the same.
  14. 3.7 sounds like a pretty competitive GPA, but is speech included in the GPA they use? I thought they only used there required prerqs to calculate GPA. Don't remember if speech was one them or not. I know AP I & II for sure & Mirco, but can't remember what else. Very well could be. I have pushed a lot of information into my head this past year, so I am sure some other things have gotten pushed out :) I did Micro over the summer too- it was ok. The semester before me and the one before that had students who had not taken Mirco & gotten in- I know this because there were student who had just passed levels II & III in my summer Mirco class, so you can get in without it & take it later. It happens. Just depends on what all those other people do that apply with you. I thought "#50!!! Theres no way I'm getting in!" That meant that 50 people had to drop for me to get a spot.....but I got it. I hope you get in!!!
  15. I got in after the first time I applied for Fall, but.....................the first letter I got said that I was on the alternate list, so if people dropped out, I would get that spot, but.............I was #50 so I saw no hope. All I could do was wait it out. While I waited I applied for Spring, just in case. I got a letter accepting me into that semester and then 2 weeks before Fall started I got a call saying that a spot was available for me. I had all pre-reqs completed & well in all, I think my Micro class didn't count b/c I took it iver the summer, the grade posted too late- that's was why I was an alternate...I think. Apparently everyone else had all required pre-reqs. Basically if you have all your pre-reqs done and did well, your in. Good luck to you!!!! I am done with my 1st year on Monday!
