I took my nclex this morning.. My computer shut off after 75 questions.. I THINK I FAILED... there were tons of priority question, safety precaution and enviroment, 1 med ( real easy) , 3 check all that applies. I went home and check the answer and I knew that I failed beacuse I have a feeling that I did horrible in the safety and infection control. Don't you have to pass all content area in order to pass? There were questions about mycoplasma pneumonia..which I was not sure about... The questions that they ask you on the NCLEX exam isnt so difficult However, it is the ANSWER choices that totally blew my mind!!! Even though I knew the content to a certain topic I was having the hardest time picking an answer beacuse they were soo tricky..
I have a question.. if in case of a emergeny.. who would u attent to first? a patient who is unconscious with dilated and fixed pupil or a patient who has eccohymosis and ridgit abdomen? I would guss the second one beacuse of internal bleeding?

dont stress start to build something or go surfing to clear your mind. the test is set up so you get about 50% correct/wrong. its the level of difficulty of the questions you answered thats important. as for your question i would go for the first patient because he/she is showing signs of increased ICP or other neuro issues that might effect his/her respirations. but need more info like how long they have been there but if emergeny the second patient is not showing any signs of distress but the first patient is in distress so i would see him/her first. everyone i know that took the boards feels like you wheather they passed or not because everyone gets about half wrong pass or fail. FYI i am taking the boards monday already starting to fell sick.:imbar hope to hear good things from you very soon.

Remember that saying, "prority questions are a very good thing."
Everyone comes out of the exam, feeling like they flunked, and will never be a nurse, and most of them pass. :balloons:
Go and do something special for yourself today, you deserve it. If you are in NY, then you have to wait until Sunday to get your results, but they will be on the Pearson-Vue site then, so that is another good thing in your favor. You do not need to wait two weeks or more for a response.:)

To answer your question...it all depends on the situation, if it the emergency happened in the hospital, I would say attend to patient #1first as the patient is showing ICP..But if the scenario happened in a disaster ( like airplane crash...) you would wanna see #2 patient first because this patient has a higher chance of surviving compared to #1 who may not survive anymore *(maybe brain dead??)....I maybe worng so I hope someone will (Suzanne?) enlighten us...I tried..

I've always understood in an emergency situation you go for the one that you have the chance of saving. The fixed and dilated pupil is a sign of a late stage brain injury and the chance of survival is low compared to the one with the rigid adbomen.
Like Suzanne said, everyone comes out of NCLEX thinking they failed.

I felt the same way!!! I just found out I passed today. I got 75 questions on my exam on Tuesday. I got 2 math questions - one that was very easy I thought and the other was a titrating questions. I think I remember the pneumonia question on my exam but it was part of an answer. I am sure you did fine. I felt that I failed because I didn't think 75 questions was able to determine my compentency. Relax now -- try to get your mind off of the exam .. if you dont .. you will lose sleep and start thinking crazy ... like I did!

congratulations, kcheng!!! :melody:
yeah i agree see the one with the best chance for survival, however, who to see i agree also depends on location and situation. i remember this question on one of my tests at school. that was after a change in shift with all patients being reported stable and walk into the room. but school tests always like to throw in a trick question or two. not board tests though. thinking boards i change my vote to pt. 2 :) dont think about the questions because you know a word said this way or a certin phrase said that way changes the focus of it.
your going to think i did good because this then an hour later you will be saying no no i did not do so good because this or times when you go man i just dont know. go places blow off a little steam.

Kapplan teaches to attend to the least stable patient first. That generally means attend to the airway first but not always and they even make that clear right from the beginning. It's difficult to know sometimes. Sometimes you have to answer honestly and sometimes you have to answer how you think they want you to answer. It's called "critical guessing." Anyone who has completed a nursing program is familiar with the concept. I don't think there's enough info in the OPs question to answer accurately; however, when I see an unconscious person with s/sx of ICP, I think to myself "R/F brain herniation rapidly progressing to brain damage/death." Internal bleeding is bad too but if the pt is a walkie-talkie, chances are, the ICP pt is a better option. Those absolute worst case scenario prioritization questions are often times ridiculous but at least you only need to be right a little more than 50% of the time.

Thanks everyone for replying back to my post..
I didn't notice until today the massive spelling errors that I had made on the previous post.. Haha.. I wrote the post right after I got back from the testing center.. I guess I was really worried, anxious, crazy?? not sure how to put into words but it was definitely a very unsettling feeling... I decided to stop worrying about the exam beacuse I cant change what is already done and instead went out on friday night..=)
BTW, the Emergency was in a disaseter scenario.. and after reading everyones opinions I think I got it right by picking the patient who was conscious..
I feel a lot more at ease after reading everyon's comments.. Thankss... i guess I will know the answer tomorroww YIKES!
