Nassau Community College

Published

I have applied to Nassau Community College's Nursing Program for the third and final time. I have been declined two other times and if I get denied a third time I will not apply again. It is getting a little embarrassing that I keep on getting declined.

Their lose is another school's gain...

It is true that their lose is another's gain....however, some colleges have a waiting list of 2 to 4 years...I don't think the Nursing Program at NCC will care about that.

In your area, there are other schools also have the nursing programs...such as NYIT, Long Island University and some others...I remember 7 years ago, I experienced the same thing....then I decided to go for the LPN Program...I took the entrance exam at Nassau BOCES, and I passed it. I graduated from the program, and working as an LPN since the end of 1999. I moved up one more time in 2003 when I graduated in Helene Fuld....guess what ....in a few days, I will have 6 months experience in the ICU. It does not have to be community college...there is always another way to do it.

Good luck!

I have also applied to 4 other schools. My main point is they don't do not even give anyone a chance. I am sure that I am not the only one applying multiple times and getting declined. You would think they would say "this person seems really determined - maybe we should give her/him a chance".

Oh well - crossing my fingers to get accepted into some nursing program!

To maximize the chances....try all the schools in the area, including New York City....and New Jersey.

There are some programs that are offered by the hospitals. I hope this will help.

HI Chuck, i live in the NY area and have researched schools for about the last year and a half -- would you mind sharing some of the NJ hospital based schools -- as i am also applying to 4 schools. thank you, the CC are too difficult to get in and some have varying pre-reqs -- so i tried to choose the one's i thought gave me the better shot at getting into.

thanks a million

I am so sorry GiGi15, and I think you have to do the internet research yourself.

You didn't mention your GPA....is it competitive(3.5ish)? It's supply and demand, and there are tons of extremely qualified people competing for a limited number of spots in these programs.

If you are serious about becoming a nurse, you need to complete all the varying pre-reqs for all the different schools and apply elsewhere.

I did what Chuck did...I completed an LPN program and then went on from there to become an RN.The LPN programs are usually a bit less competitive(entry-wise), and from there you can decide what your next move will be. Contrary to popular opinion, LPN training is intense and clinically oriented from the first month of the program. I give all credit for my clinical competence to my LPN program.....I can still recall my first med-surg job(as an LPN) and how I knew answers to my nurse manager's question drills that the BSN's did not.

You said something about applying over and over and don't they see that you're determined...ummmmmm...NO. Every time you apply is independent of every other time that you've applied.(did you take the statistics pre-req yet?)

Good luck to you.

How badly do you want to be a nurse? That is the question? I gave up on Nassau because I want to be a nurse so I applied to many, many, many schools in the NY area. I am lucky that I am able to relocate to a school if I have to and understand that others may not have that option. But they're still plenty of private schools in the tristate area that offer an ADN program at about $3000-$5000 a semester. If you can't afford it take out a loan because there are some hospitals that will reimburses you afterwards. I've done lots of research on schools because I truly want and am serious about becoming a nurse.

Best of luck to you, I hope you realize that there are other schools besides Nassau community college that would give you the oppurtunity, if you really want it.

I have applied to 4 other schools in addition to Nassau. I have given up all hope of getting into Nassau but I thought I would give it one more try.

Tracy,

I commend you on your postive attitude towards the nursing application process. However, the obstacles that we go throughin life makes us stronger and better. I have 2 suggestions regarding your situation:

Option #1- Forget about NCC. There are other nursing programs out there that would give you a chance. Have you ever considered leaving town as in going out of state or upstate NY? Applying to nursing school is becoming as competitive as medical school- So many applicants, so little seats. As others have previously posted, there are other schools in the tri-state area. Private schools are a good option according to Wsmith16- take out loans if possible. Also, I understand that there is a nursing school in the Caribbean (St. Kitts) that is affiliated with US Nursing Schools and its accredited.

Option #2- LPN School. The course is for 18 months and you can take the NCLEX-PN exam, work to gain experience and enroll in an LPN-RN school such as Excelsior College, Helene Fuld and others. The beauty with the LPN to RN program is that you can work and attend school (in some instances such as Excelsior College b/c its an accredited online school).

Tracy whatever you do- do not give up and keep positve. Good luck and if you have any questions please PM me.

Had you taken classes over to raise your GPA before you reapplied?

Nassau IS really hard to get into, mainly because their tuition is so cheap. I wouldn't take it personally, or too hard, if you didnt get in the first time because there really is SO much competition, but, unless i raised my grades significantly, i also wouldn't continue to reapply there. The odds dont get any better, the competition doesn't get any weaker, and you don't get any priority from having applied before. It stinks, but i wouldnt waste my money on it.

did you try Farmingdale and Suffolk CC?

I know the private schools are expensive, too, but if you're really serious about wanting to be a nurse, i think its worth it. Especially since many hospitals will pay back your loan for you if you sign a contract with them (my friend did this with St. Francis, and they paid back all of her student loans- or they pay her extra $$$ each month towards it- either way, she doesnt have to pay and she went to Adelphi).

There are other options. Good luck!!
