My 9 year old patient was raped and required surgery

Nurses Safety

Published

I currently have a 9 year old girl I am taking care of on unit. She was raped resulting in surgical repair to entire pelvic floor and also needed a colostomy. As I change her sheets and such I just don't know what to do. I cry everytime I walk in there. I just want to hold her. She isn't allowed visitors and she is so scared. My heart is breaking. Any advice?

I am so excited for all of you! Let us know how it goes at home!!! What a wonderful way to start a happy NEW chapter in her life! God BLESS!!!!:heartbeat

I pray she continues to feel safe, secure, and happy. God bless you & your kids for giving her a chance to live in a home where she can be loved and not abused and afraid.

I am wondering how she did on her first night in your home.

She is doing very well here. She didn't sleep much the first night but now she's comfortable in her room. She has been up playing quite a bit with my kids, they get along really well. The police have picked up the other perp. in Missouri but he hasn't been brought back down here as of yet, but he should be brought to our jail any time now so that has been a relief. I am sorry it has taken so long to get on here to update my computer is completely locked up I'm at my neighbors house now, so I will get on here as often as I can but probably every couple days until I get mine up and running. Thanks.

I'm so happy to hear things are going well, and the people that are responsible for what has happened to this beautiful little girl will face justice.

I still send prayers your way and wish you and your family nothing but the best. I'm glad that she now has a home where she can feel safe. :heartbeat:redpinkhe:heartbeat

I'm so glad she's getting settled in and on her way to becoming a part of your family. I am also thankful that the second perp is now in custody and hope neither her father or his friend ever see sunlight again except in stripes through bars. Give her a hug from all of us here. Prayers are being offered for her continued physical and emotional healing. Hugs to you and your other kids.:icon_hug:

DO NOT tell this girl your story. I worked in a legal office before nursing. If you tell this girl your story she now has a story besides her own. By doing so, the rapists' laywer now has a case for dismissal because he can say you fed her the story. Case dismissed and the *^*($#% evil person gets to go free. If it is her father, DCFS now has no case to remove the child from the home because the charges were dropped and now she may be subject to more abuse.

I agree that this child is hurting and needs love. Be there for her but don't overstep your boundaries as a nurse. We have them to save ourselves as much as our patients.

Wow, I didn't even finish reading the whole thing before I posted. My mistake. I'm glad there was a good outcome for the whole situation. I hope all goes well with your decision and you can maintain for this child the life she deserves.

Sorry I haven't been on here in so long. She is doing just wonderful. But we have had a setback of another type recently. Apparently squirrels have been in my attic chewing on electrical wires and last week the second floor of my house burnt. Everyone is fine and we were able to save alot of our belongings from the first floor of the house. I just feel awful that this poor girl had to endure yet another scary situation in my home. SHe is handling it very well. Luckily I also own a rent house that the tenants had just moved out of last month so that's where we are living until I am able to get the other house rebuilt. The kids are doing great but I am about ready for some Ativan lol. I was afraid that she would be removed from me because of the fire but her caseworker came and did another home study on the other house we've moved in to and said everything is fine and she wants her to stay with me because she is doing so well with us. She is up playing quite a bit and hopefully will be released to go back to school next week. We are still waiting for a trial date. Thanks again for all the prayers and support.

Wow, that's a terrible hassle, southern yankee! Rodents can be so destructive. I'm glad everyone is okay.

I personally like squirrels. I read somewhere years ago if you feed the little suckers they are less likely to go "searching" for food.

If you have a nut tree nearby, be sure to keep the gutters cleaned out. That will keep them off your house. I used to have a large pecan tree that literally hung over my house and every morning I woke up to the pitter patter of little squirrel feet!

I'm so glad to hear from you at last. I have been wondering how things were going and how she's doing. I'm sorry about the fire but relieved to hear you had another house to settle in. Squirrels can be a pain. Our house is Civil War vintage and we've had to contend with them off and on since we bought the house. Keep us updated as you are able.

Hugs,
