My Two Cents

I think that the field of nursing is one of the most rewarding, challenging and well paid careers in the world. However, as a pre-nursing student (still taking prerequisites) I would just like to say that, GETTING INTO NURSING SCHOOL SHOULD BE AS EASY AS GETTING INTO A CNA PROGRAM!!!!! And that's just my two cents....

Why? Not just anyone should become a nurse. Only those who can do well in the pre-reqs should be admitted. Even just being a nursing student bears a lot of responsibility and I don't want non-achievers anywhere near me, my family members, or my patients.

If anyone could get in easily there would be an even worse glut of new grads on the market than there is now. It could lead to the downfall of the profession.

Hmm, that's pushing it. Most times, what you did not work hard for, you don't really appreciate.

IMHO,everyone needs to serve their time, more especially to keep one grounded.

Your last sentence got me thinking- I cannot right now, think of a profession that has seen this many influx of people as does nursing. Or is there?

The IT industry? Real estate?

I would also like to clarify that I think having it be a little easier for QUALIFIED students to get into nursing school might not be a bad thing, but it certainly should not be as easy as getting into CNA programs.

Ha! And, I bet you would like it if it were as easy to complete a nursing program as it is to complete a CNA program.

Maybe we should all just buy a degree.

Really, the standards are high for a reason. If you think it is hard to get in, just wait until you are actually in a program.

I disagree. The hard is what makes it great. I am very proud to have earned the right to pursue my dream.

LOL...as much as i usually am on the side of the underdog, in this one i have to disagree. I have seen some very unskilled CNA's in my day that have absolutely NO business being a nurse. Thank God that Nursing programs are as stringent as they are, to weed out ppl like this.

Plus, I think that the harder you work to obtain something, the more you appreciate it.

Have you seen the drop-out rates in RN school? If they made it easier to get in the door, the classes would be packed with people who could never graduate. They weed it out so that by the last year, you only have those seriouse dedicated students who will become profesionals.

If you open the doors up too much, it just wastes the instructors time, and wastes class time. There are surely enough qualified people who end up not making the grade without diluting the class further with people who won't make it past the first midterm.

Oh, great! Just what we need in Ohio, making nursing school as easy to get into as STNA school. So then, let's see ... we would have approximately 2 billion RN students in Ohio as opposed to just 1 billion. Sounds like a plan! How in the world would these students with no background in science, chemistry, and math pass all the RN courses, you ask? Geez, why be logical?

Lower the standards? They just put in to place effective April first that passing the boards is going to be tougher. I am for it 100%. The school I went to always started with about 40 students in the nursing class and graduated about 15-18. Most were dropped by the school for not being able to make the grade.
