My nursing dreams are over . I failed.

Published

Being a nurse has been my dream for years. I put my heart into this from day one. I went to clinicals even when I was 9 months pregnant, had my daughter and came back 5 days later to finish the semester (1st semester). I did great on 2nd semester and last spring I was supposed to start my 3rd. I dropped the class due to leaving my abusive boyfriend and other personal problems. Came back this fall to retake the class. My grades were: 82, 84, 72 and 66.

Average: 74. I failed the class by 1 point. My school only allows us to take the same class twice. Anything more than that and you're out. I'm out.

I'm devastated. Broken. I've put so much into this. I was so close and now I'm miles away. Everything depended on me graduating in June. Now I won't graduate at all. I don't even know what to do from now on. My family tells me to beg for a point, but I know they won't give it to me.

Has anybody been in this situation?? I don't mind retaking the class if they allow me to. But being DROPPED?? After everything i went through?? :o

I'm griving today as if someone had died. My dream died. :crying2:

Specializes in Chiropractic assistant, CNA in LTC, RN.

I have a friend who dropped out once from an RN program. Came back, failed clinical and they tried to expell her. She fought them and got to come back only to fail again. She went back to a different school and did the LPN route, graduated last May, passed her boards in October, and is now working as an LPN in a LTC and loves it. Don't give up if nursing is what you want.

Wow that is terrible. Big hugs. If this is really what you want, which it sounds like it is, fight to get readmitted. But if that doesn't work you could go the LPN route then bridge to RN. I can totally relate, I was thrown out of my LPN program 3 weeks before graduation. I'm fighting it, talked to the dean, she could care less, then I filed a grievance and we'll see if that goes anywhere. Unfortunately nursing school usually doesn't cut you any breaks:crying2:

I heard once that if you can't go jump over an obstacle go around it. Don't let anything stand in the way of your dream!!! So good luck, let us know how things work out.

Awww man, this email broke my heart - I am literally in tears for you!

I would do everything I can to "beg for the grade" as you mentioned. Even if you feel in your heart that nothing will be done, I would start from there. If they decide that you are completely out, I would take the transcript and apply somewhere else. Your career dream is NEVER dead until you are 6ft under! This is just a temporary bump in the road but if nursing is your passion, do whatever you need to do to realize your dream. Somethings happen to us for a particular reason - you just have to find out what that reason is, learn from it and move on. My heart goes out to you for this pain you are feeling.

Hi TinkerBell

You live in NY? I replied earlier may be you didn't see my post. Since you live in NY, why don't you transfer to SUNY Rockland Community College. They accept transfer students (NUR-I Fundamentals) and then you start from NUR II and also they allow you to split NUR courses in two parts, that way it's not a lot of pressure.

please check it out, and let me know if you have any questions...

never give up...you can do this its just a small stepping stone. Pick yourself off and dust off and keep going

Didn't you just say you can retake a class once? So what if you have to go an extra semester, this is a life long career, and you will ALWAYS be a student even if you are reading on your own. Stay in school and take anything they will let you, like english, etc. Or, maybe some online school is for you, and get your RN on your own. Don't give up because you have to retake something,,,,, beg for a makeup test!!

I have no advice but I sincerely hope it works out for you. Use positive thinking and sit down with your adviser. Explain your situation and see if they can help.

Don't let one point determine your future.

Please don't give up! Your dreams are only over if you let them be that way. There are other nursing schools, other ways to become a nurse. As hard as you've worked and with all of the obstacles you've overcome, this should not be the end of your dream. Please go talk to your teacher and/or the dean and if they won't give you the one point remember this: God opens door that no man can close; and my personal favorite: when a door closes, God opens a window! Keep your head up, and don't give up!!!

I absolutely love that scripture about God opening a door that no man can close. I too failed out of nursing school, and was emailed the same scripture the very day I was to appeal for readmittance. As i spoke with the financial aid officer about my situation, she encouraged me not to give up and qouted the same scripture. As things turned out, I was given a second chance (by God) to continue my pursuit of becoming a nurse. So I would just like to encourage you to have faith and continue the pursuit of achieving your dream of becoming a nurse. God can change any situation no matter how barren it may seem. I'm a living witness.

God bless

Just had to reply to this. My heart breaks for you, but I also want to add to the replies you got saying don't give up. Check out RCC. Do you already have a BS/BA in something else? if so, try the accelerated programs. WPU in NJ has one. Several ppl in my RN class have failed by 1 pt. They do not get the pt even if they beg. Personally, I would advise you not to do this. IMO, RNs have to accept responsibility. Others have recommended you discuss why you had to WD the first time and want to repeat the course. This should be acceptable. Just don't give up. If you are not allowed to repeat at this school, call all the schools you can think of to find one that transfers 101. You said you are willing to move. You should be able to find a school to transfer. Most schools will accept prerequisites classes that are less than 5,7, 10 yrs old depending. You should not have to repeat those courses. If you really cannot do that, get your LPN. Maybe a counselor can explain how to get your LPN w credits you already have. If you need a break, go for your surg tech license. Those programs are 1 yr. You can earn a decent living, get exp then go back to RN in a few yrs. Make sure you don't let your prereqs expire though.

Kay

I just had to come share the news with you guys: I'M BACK IN THE NURSING PROGRAM!!! They accepted my appeal!!:yeah:

I was so depressed at first, I was close to losing hope but I'm glad I wrote the letter. I didn't ask for a free point, I only asked for a chance to retake the class. And they allowed me!

Thank you guys so much for all your kind words of support. I wish I could hug each and everyone of you. I spreaded the info about RCC to my classmates that were not as fortunate so you guys not only helped me, but also a lot of my classmates.

:heartbeat :nurse:

You are a sweetie! Now go and show them what you're made of! We're proud of you!

Congratulations...This is great news!! Good luck next semester.
