Being a nurse has been my dream for years. I put my heart into this from day one. I went to clinicals even when I was 9 months pregnant, had my daughter and came back 5 days later to finish the semester (1st semester). I did great on 2nd semester and last spring I was supposed to start my 3rd. I dropped the class due to leaving my abusive boyfriend and other personal problems. Came back this fall to retake the class. My grades were: 82, 84, 72 and 66.
Average: 74. I failed the class by 1 point. My school only allows us to take the same class twice. Anything more than that and you're out. I'm out.
I'm devastated. Broken. I've put so much into this. I was so close and now I'm miles away. Everything depended on me graduating in June. Now I won't graduate at all. I don't even know what to do from now on. My family tells me to beg for a point, but I know they won't give it to me.
Has anybody been in this situation?? I don't mind retaking the class if they allow me to. But being DROPPED?? After everything i went through??
I'm griving today as if someone had died. My dream died.
Being a point off from a higher grade is a common occurrence. Whether a grade should/could be reexamined has more to do with the stakes involved. A B to an A is a low stakes result. B students are not dismissed from programs. Its a different matter when it is a question of dismissal. A percentage point shift could be caused by 4-5 bad questions on exams and quizzes.
Its easy to say try harder next time but we are dealing with peoples lives. My mother is a retired nurse educator and she absolutely hated it when one of her students failed. The question becomes if and how did the system fail. And that is when faculty have to use their best judgement because statistical variability can explain the grade. At the very least the OP should try an informal conversation with her instructor followed by a formal appeal to allow readmission through the Department chair.

i have a friend who failed 3 times. she is in her last semester now and should be finished this december. her school had the same you can only come back once rule. she appealed to the dean or whoever and wrote a heartfelt letter explaining why she failed and asked for a consideration to repeat the same class. they let her comeback x 3 but she had to do some lab skills hours or something.
anyway, try appealing by writing a heartfelt letter explaining your situations and ask for consideration. if they say no, at least you try. also since you finished more than 50 percent of your rn class, you are eligible to go to excelsior college to obtain your rn degree. it is a distance learning rn program based in albany, new york.
anyway, i offered you some options so hopefully everything works out for the best for you. good luck!

I'm so very sorry that you are hurting so badly. Tragedy ALWAYS seems to strike at the worst possible moments. If it's going to go wrong, it will happen during nursing school, huh? I tend to agree with the post that mentions not asking for the point; if they make exceptions for one, they will have to make exceptions for all. There are always other schools, even if it means starting over. Many times, other directors are sympathetic to your plight and might take whatever credits you have under your belt. If not and you do have to begin again, at least you will have a good knowledge base and dazzle them with excellent grades. If this is truly what you have your heart set on doing, then let NOTHING stand in your way. Good luck and God bless.
There's a saying which goes "the squeaky wheel gets the most oil" ..... if nursing is your dream, and a lot of other things have been going on in your life to make your path to nursing a bit rocky, and you've been juggling balls, other commitments, other peoples' needs whilst still staying on track to your goal, then now sounds like the time to jump up and down and REALLY let the appropriate people know you deserve the chance! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain! You go girl and dont let nuthin' stand in your way ok!!
I am really sorry to hear that. well, were you in ADN or BSN program? Contact other colleges that transfer first semester of nursing (NUR I), that way you won't have to repeat NUR I.
Where do you live? I know one college that takes transfer students from other colleges who have finished first semester of nursing, RCC (Rockland Community College, Suffern, NY). www.sunyrockland.edu
or try other local colleges in your area or you could do LPN in one year, if you don't wana wait and then do part time RN.
Good Luck dear!
I'm really sorry that you failed, but your dream is only over if you choose it to be. There is always a way to get back on track. You have been through some tough times, you will get through these too.
When that is said, that is harsh harsh harsh failing by one point. I would be gutted too.
Maybe this is a good time to invoke Churchill: "Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm"
I am so sorry to hear PT. I am a first semester at City Tech and just go an A in Foundations of Learning class. I keep hearing that 3rd semester is really a make or break semester.
If you have proven to be a good student can they allow you to work at something for a one point addition. Its a bit unfair.
I am trying to undersstand how i will do then, if I am getting an A, what are the chances I can make it past 3rd semester?
My deepest sympathies. please talk to prof mcguinn..
Good luck
Thanks for all your replies! I have been too depressed to even come to allnurses, I'm glad I got so many supportive replies.
So after giving this much thought, I've made up my mind: I'M NOT GIVING UP. I feel in my heart that I really deserve this and that's why I will beg to be readmitted if needed be. I don't believe in asking for free points, so that's not an option for me, but I will try to speak to the head professor and even the dean if I have too.
If all else fails, I'm might start as a LPN and then do a bridge for RN. It sucks because most schools in my area will not allow me to transfer my prereqs. I got all As in those classes and it really hurts that they won't count for anything.
I have a few questions and I'd appreciate if anyone could help me:
1) A few people have mentioned Excelsior and I understand I can get a degree from them, but will any hospitals take me seriously with an online degree??? How can anyone become a nurse without clinical experience??
2) Im in NY. As far as I know I can't transfer my nursing credits anywhere. Does anybody know of ANY school in ANY state where that would be possible? I'm willing to move.
3) Can I take the test to become a licensed CNA or do I need to take specific CNA classes to take that exam? (I'm thinking about working as a CNA while going to school)
I don't know of schools where credits transfer. At least in VA
But I know in the program that I'm in- you were able to take some sort of a test and test out of a certain class if you wanted to. And maybe you could find a school that would let you test out of certain classes.
For example- I failed fundamentals at my old school. I applied to another program, and they told me I could try to test out of fundamentals (nursing 101) if I wanted to. But- since it was more than just a few points (21!) I just decided to take fundamentals all over again, even though I knew 90% was going to be a repeat of information.
Best of luck to you. BTDT, so I can understand how you feel

That is how it is at my school as well. You can only take a class twice. However, a withdrawal is not considered taking the class. They count it as a half, as long as you didn't withdraw fail. Talk to an advisor and talk to your dean. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I promise!
