My nursing dreams are over . I failed.

Published

Being a nurse has been my dream for years. I put my heart into this from day one. I went to clinicals even when I was 9 months pregnant, had my daughter and came back 5 days later to finish the semester (1st semester). I did great on 2nd semester and last spring I was supposed to start my 3rd. I dropped the class due to leaving my abusive boyfriend and other personal problems. Came back this fall to retake the class. My grades were: 82, 84, 72 and 66.

Average: 74. I failed the class by 1 point. My school only allows us to take the same class twice. Anything more than that and you're out. I'm out.

I'm devastated. Broken. I've put so much into this. I was so close and now I'm miles away. Everything depended on me graduating in June. Now I won't graduate at all. I don't even know what to do from now on. My family tells me to beg for a point, but I know they won't give it to me.

Has anybody been in this situation?? I don't mind retaking the class if they allow me to. But being DROPPED?? After everything i went through?? :o

I'm griving today as if someone had died. My dream died. :crying2:

CariocaRN - did you appeal thru citytech???Im currently a 3rd semester student and didnt pass the class again due to unforseen problems and have an appeal in.. they are saying I have to wait until august which is just crazy and i am not trying to figure out what route to take...

Hi! Yes, I appealed through City Tech. Their appeal process takes forever. I was counting myself out, so I had taken the test to get into a LPN program and everything. The waiting was killing me! The day before classes were supposed to start, they called me to let me know they had accepted my appeal. I was in complete shock!

I just wanted to let you know that my case was a bit different. I only failed the class once and by only 1 point. I had dropped the first time around, even though I was PASSING the class. I only dropped because I had serious personal problems, which I explained in my appeal letter. From what I have seen, they are a bit more flexible when it comes to Dropping/Failing vs Failing/Failing.

I'm not at all trying to discourage you. I'm proof that there's always hope, but make sure you get in touch with any professors who you like and who you had a good experience with. Explain your story, keep in touch with them through email. Richardson is not the only person who makes the decision, they have a meeting and a few professors attend and vote. Also, don't be afraid to get into details about what happened. In my case I was pretty uncomfortable explaining why I had dropped and failed the class, I was going through a lot in my personal life and it was embarrassing to tell them. But I know that if I had kept my letter very dry and to the point, they probably wouldn't have accepted my appeal. I also NEVER asked for a "free point" or to have my grade bumped up. I asked for the opportunity to retake the class, which they eventually allowed me to do and I passed with no problems.

Whatever happens, don't give up. I graduated last year and I passed the NCLEX with flying colors. Don't let this bump in the road discourage you. Good luck!

i am glad to hear that you were able to re enter the program, for many it has not been an easy ride back into the program. I luckily have graduated and since there am an RN. but the program at citytech was difficult, unorganized and unapologetic. regardless anyone can complete it if they stay focused, study and can endure the studying as one would in the career as well.

I know it has not been easy for anybody. I have a good friend who failed 4th semester twice and she got kicked out literally days before pinning. It was heartbreaking. City Tech is not unorganized in my opinion, their rules are clear, they are just extremely strict. They only want the best of the best to graduate to keep the NCLEX passing rates high. Last year our passing rate was 91.5%, which is much higher than all the other CUNY schools, so they gotta be doing something right. It's just really hard to see so many excellent students, who would have been great nurses, being dropped left and right. :(
