My Experience With The Four-Day Live Hurst Review For NCLEX

The intended purpose of this article is to describe my personal experiences with the four-day live Hurst Review. Although I attended more than two years ago, I recall my experience with much positivity and would recommend this review to anyone who needs help with learning nursing content.

My Experience With The Four-Day Live Hurst Review For NCLEX

Let me start by disclosing some background information to enable readers to paint a mental picture. I completed a 12-month LVN program back in late 2005 and passed the NCLEX-PN with the minimum of 85 questions on my first attempt by using the Saunders Comprehensive book for self-review. After working as an LVN in long term care for three years, I returned to school in early 2009 and graduated from an RN completion program in March 2010 which resulted in the conferral of an associate of science degree in nursing.

I knowingly enrolled in an RN bridge program at a private for-profit school that had consistently low first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates; however, the schedule and time frame being offered were convenient for me. To give readers an idea of just how low the pass rates were, this particular school of nursing had a first-time pass rate of 47 percent in 2007. The 2008 first-time pass rate slightly increased to 56 percent, and the 2009 pass rate was not much better. In case you are wondering, the state board of nursing did eventually place this nursing program on probation as a result of the dismal NCLEX-RN pass rates of its former students.

Live Review Through Kaplan?

The nursing program that I attended offered a four-day live review through Kaplan free of charge to all students, and although I was in attendance all four days, I felt it did not provide the content review that I believed I desperately needed. My friend had attended a four-day live Hurst Review session in Alabama back in 2005 while studying to take the NCLEX-PN and had nothing but good things to say about her experience, so we both made plans to attend as part of our review for the NCLEX-RN.

Live Hurst Review Session

My friend and I both reside in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas, but decided to make the 300+ mile drive to a live Hurst Review session in a small city in Arkansas. We stayed at a hotel during the four days that we were in town and managed to conjure up a mini vacation out of our time in this economically depressed city. We attended the live review from March 31 until April 3, 2010.

Is Hurst Review worth the money?

I thoroughly enjoyed the live Hurst Review. The instructor was an elderly, experienced critical care nurse who had a sense of humor, a passion for nursing, and a flair for teaching things in a simplified manner. The Hurst Review provided excellent content review. In fact, I ended up learning facts and tidbits that the instructors at my former school of nursing had never covered. In my opinion, the review filled in many of the knowledge gaps that my abbreviated nursing education left. The nicest part was the fact that the instructor employed techniques that helped attendees to easily remember all of the nursing content.

To keep a long story short, I passed the NCLEX-RN on May 11, 2010 on my first attempt with the minimum of 75 questions. Even though I attribute much of my success to my hard work, the Hurst Review was a major tool that helped me fight the uphill battle. My friend, on the other hand, took NCLEX-RN during the same week and failed with 265 questions after having reviewed with both Kaplan and Hurst. However, she did not study the test materials properly or put in the necessary time.

Use Hurst Review For Comprehensive Review of Nursing Content

In a nutshell, I would definitely recommend the Hurst Review for any student or graduate who needs a comprehensive review of nursing content. Kaplan is excellent for test taking strategies, but the Hurst Review is stellar for teaching the content in a manner that is easy to absorb.

When you say content on hurst, are you talking about the hurst videos? I'm so nervous right now, because I don't know what else should I study or how should I study for my second attempt this coming sept 8. I've been studying almost 6-7days 2-10hrs a day. I'm doing Kaplan for the second time and hurst video for the first time. However, for hurst I am only watching the videos, which I really like because it was easy to u destined and almost 90% on the videos I remember from nursing school and I think 10% from the videos I totally forgot or didn't heard at all. Anyway, I'm just freaking out and I really want to pass this second time around, as my second schedule comes closer I'm getting nervous and feeling I don't know anything. Any advice for the nest 8days to do before exam my exam date is very much appreciated. Thank you.

I attended the live four-day Hurst Review. It was conducted at a small community college inside a classroom and taught by an instructor over a period of four days for approximately 7 to 8 hours per day. I did not watch any videos as part of my review.

When I say content, I am referring to all of the nursing content that a student would have learned in school such as disease processes, pharmacology, delegation, prioritization, med/surg, OB, psych, and so forth.

Do you think hurst videos are the same as what you have learned from the four days review? It has all the Nursing content.

Although I have not watched any of the Hurst videos, I would assume that they cover the same (or similar) content that is being taught in the live reviews.

I see, ok. Thank you so much.

In my opinion, Hurst is an excellent resource for NCLEX RN. Live Hurst is now 3 days (8am to 4pm with 1 hour lunch and 10 minute breaks every hour). The LIVE review consist of a facilitator and other times, we watched videos during the live class. They've modified this a bit from when I first attended in 2010.

I've watched their videos as well and found it more conducive for my learning as I can rewind any section over and over again. And yes, their videos mirror their live reviews and vice versa.

Interesting. My friend took the live Hurst Review in 2005 and, back then, it was a five day review. We took it in 2010 and, by that time, it was a four day review. Nowadays it is a three day review? It seems that they are shortening the review as time passes, perhaps to appeal to more prospective test takers who do not want to sit in a classroom for five days.

The online Hurst review videos are identical to what is covered in the live class. The same study guide is also used. I would agree with others in saying that this is an excellent review.

I also took the 3 day live review. While some concepts were explained so that I could understand them better, I don't feel that any of the reviews I took helped. Honestly, I think only 2 questions on my NCLEX-RN were even addressed in my reviews. BTW, I passed with 90 something questions.

I didn't take it and most of my classmates that did, said it didn't really help THAT much. We had an NLN review built into our tuition, which gave us practice online resources and a 2 day live review with scenarios that combined concepts. Community ADN college program. About a third took the Hurst. 100% pass rate for our class. I passed w/75 questions

I just didn't have the money for it. We had a few that did like OP. Made mini-vacations out of the review.

We did have a woman from Hurst come give a sales pitch (for lack of a better word, she was great) and in 15 minutes, I think she gave us the best advice: always safety first and never call the physician ;p

I did the Hurst review in Atlantic City NJ right after graduation. I did make a mini vacay out of it! Hurst definitely helped me - especially for fluids and electrolytes!!
