Mt. SAC application for spring 2016

Published

Hi everyone !!! After 5 years I finally decided to pick up where I left off. Time to apply for nursing school :D

Application period is July 1st - September 1st. I'm coming in with 54 points pre-HESI. Just wanted to wish anyone else out there applying to Mt. SAC good luck with the HESI tomorrow ;)

I have yet to see a thread on this particular application period for Mt. SAC so I hope many more join this thread as we proceed with this tedious journey.

I saw this on a previous thread here, actually written by barcode120x.

Mt. SAC (city of Walnut) has finally REOPENEDapplications to their ADN program starting SPRING 2014. Those that apply right now up until the last date which I think is somewhere in October will be applying for spring of 2014, and so on. It was closed for about a year to a year and a half due to switching acceptance systems from Lottery-based to Multi-Criteria Screening. The main reason for the closure was to ensure that every person left on the lottery system had gotten into the program before switching to the new one (makes it fair on part of those that have been waiting).

@mzmira I heard that they did that as well. I didn't realize they left people hanging from the lottery from years ago

Thank you !! You have some hawk eyes I could not make out anything on the list not even my own name lmao ! Awwww that would have been perfect I went an hour and half earlier anticipating traffic which I didn't get and I also thought parking was going to be awful which it wasn't so all the stars aligned yesterday apparently lol !

Im thinking the students I talked to just gave up since they always knew mt sac to be waiting list and I belive they closed it for a while to finish out the list just barely opening it last year fall for application I believe.

So i thought i would give RCC a shot. I bought the dang practice test and almost regretted it instantly lol but oh well. The clinical sites for RCC are much closer to me. And I talked to my favorite charge nurse last night who has always been a mentor to me and she gave me the final push to just try. The worst that can happen is I'm in at another great school (but out 170 bucks

Ugh I feel like I'm cheating on mt sac :nailbiting:

Haha I feel like I'm cheating too. I've been a student at mtsac for five years part time (got an AS in another field). Im going to seek your guys advice on choosing a school if I get into LA County ;-)

:roflmao:I laughed so hard when I saw this. I honestly think you and natalie should choose mtsac, they have great instructors and ranked highly for an ASN program. Im sure you ladies will be successful no matter what program you choose.

Clinical site wise, LA county would be ideal for me, just for the sheer amount of experience. I don't know what sites RCC uses.

Lol it's true ! I feel like mt sac said lets go steady and I'm here like, well I'd like to see other people :banghead: yea well I'm out $88 thus far might well go for it, I'm almost mad I did that. Note to self: don't make purchases or decisions while working night shift and between the hours of 2am to 5 am

rcc clinical sites include : arrowhead regional, riverside county, riverside community, Parkview community, and kaiser

plus they started this thing since new grads everywhere were having some difficulty getting hired due to hosp looking for experienced nurses. They partnered with riverside community and kaiser. You basically commit to 3 months working free (aka they don't pay an extra nurse to train you since your pro bono) and then you can put experience on your resume BUT based on past precedence they get hired at the hospital they trained for free at ;) so that's a plus

also not sure if you all keep tabs on the job market but a CHW hospital in San bernardino is hiring new grads in the OB !!! They have high retention rates and pay very well. I love seeing new grad ads they give me hope ! Although I would love to stay where i am fact of the matter is that many many MANY nurses are leaving due to lack of pay and too much bull apparently. And I wouldn't want to get trained by a traveler nurse. I want me a well seasoned ride or die never leaving this hospital nurse lol

Arrowhead Regional would be a great hospital to do clinicals at, and the whole kaiser "internship" (haha, I love the irony of a hospital acting more business like, by trying to acquire free labor like major corp. do) sounds very beneficial, working for kaiser would be prime spots for a career.

I agree with you yclario in the sense that I want a seasoned and dedicated nurse to mentor from. But beggars can't be choosers, and in this economy, all new grads are arms wide open at any opportunity.

So so true !

i took the first practice exam online, couldn't have felt anymore incompetent ... Thanks a lot ATI  tempted to sell my codes for the online test and say screw it hahahaha the science part is a freaking joke :arghh: im an optimistic person but that score was a disgrace lol

@ natalie

I don't recall there being that many alternates. I believe there were less than 30, or even (if my mind serves me right) 20 on the alternates that were next in line. I'm 99.9% sure that alternates are guaranteed a spot in the next semester. It would be no different if the label "alternate" was taken out. They would just simply go down the list.

@ Everykindofblue

Did the nursing program prepare me for NCLEX? What you learn in class and what you are tested on in the program is textbook based. So to answer that question alone, the answer is yes because the NCLEX is based on a perfect textbook and a perfect world. NCLEX was hard for me and it was just...different. Different than what we were tested in school; however, I can't think of any other way aside from the nursing program to prepare me for NCLEX. There is no textbook out there that tells you the answers to NCLEX and that's what the nursing program is there for, to teach you textbook applications, yet expose you to the real world and to develop critical thinking skills.

@ Everykindofblue part 2

I wasn't able to find a job right away. The BRN has been "backed up" (or so they tell us) and it took about 2-3 months for majority of our class to get our ATT (Authorization To Test for the NCLEX) right after we graduated (December 2014). I took mine end of march and passed, but I didn't start working until earlier last month. Partly my fault, I wasn't really actively looking for a job right when I passed. I already worked in the hospital and kind of had the mind-set that I was set for a job, but I didn't put effort until the summer, which led to the reason why I started much later, but I don't mind, I really enjoyed my summer/time off.

@ MzMira

Haha yes, that is an old post of mine. I think there are some even older posts of mine before I got into the program because I was just as curious and anxious as you guys. I was one of those that got into the program through the lottery system (the class after me were the last ones to get in through the lottery system I think).

From what I remember, the clinical sites through your guys' next two years are San Antonio Regional Hospital (where I work at, I may see you guys sometime in the future hehe), Chino Valley Medical Center, Pomona Valley, Queen of the Valley, Inter-Community, Foothill Presbyterian, PIH, and Whittier. I may have missed one site or so, but those are the ones available for your typical "floor" rotations. I don't remember the geriatric or psych facilities for those rotations. I believe the above mentioned are also included in your peds and maternity rotation.

Thank you for every answer ! Certainly appreciate your input . Actually Pomona, chino, and San antonio are closer to my neck of the woods thank God. How often did you go to those 3 or was it dependent on whether you picked them. Mt SAC is looking pretty good :sneaky:

Sorry for the creeper emoji
