Hi everyone !!! After 5 years I finally decided to pick up where I left off. Time to apply for nursing school
Application period is July 1st - September 1st. I'm coming in with 54 points pre-HESI. Just wanted to wish anyone else out there applying to Mt. SAC good luck with the HESI tomorrow
I have yet to see a thread on this particular application period for Mt. SAC so I hope many more join this thread as we proceed with this tedious journey.
Some more info/tips based on my previous nursing program experience at Mt SAC ('13-'15):
Pharmacology should only be 3 hours once a week. You may be seeing 2, 3 hour sessions because one is offered in the morning and one is offered in the afternoon. Unless they changed it, I'm pretty sure it's still a 1 day a week, 3 hour session.
There is a reason for class to start at 7am. It guarantees everyone a parking spot and that you won't be "late" for not getting parking. Even on the first 2 weeks of the semester, there should be PLENTY of parking, close ones too.
The NCLEX pass rated dipped down for the past few semesters (2013ish) right after I started was because that was the time the BRN was "switching data/computer systems," is what the word was when I was in 1st semester. I had friends that were graduating at the time that didn't pass their NCLEX because the BRN had issues with sending out test dates (aka ATT). Many of which had to wait around 6 months to get their date and ended up not passing the first time due to it being such a long period. But, it is good to know that the pass rate has been steadily climbing again.
Go to Mt. SAC! You will enjoy and be welcomed in the program there. I think a lot of people say their nursing program is the best, but in my opinion Mt. SAC's nursing program really gave me the feeling that they wanted me to pass, graduate, and get my license and that's what's important (in addition to nursing education too). C'mon, free tutoring weekly, open door policy for instructors and clinical teachers/assistants. Not only that, but if you aren't doing so hot on quizzes/tests (getting below 75%) your lecture instructors wants a one-on-one sessions which each person to go over their study habits, what they are doing right/wrong, and advice. What other program beats that?

Thats insanely awesome! Thank you so much for clarifying those points. Although you just made it a much more difficult choice for myself if i get into a second program, haha.
My only question is for pharmacology again. Did you instructors focus more heavily on pharma during clinicals (especially year 2) since everyone only takes the class the first semester? I could imagine drug calculations being more difficult as the program progressed because of that.
Honestly no. Pharmacology is a general and very quick introduction to medications that you will be giving during clinicals. Included is a math portion of it on how to calculate dosages and what not and for every new clinical you have (ie. nursing 1B, N3, N4, N7, N8, N10) you have have to take and pass a dosage calculation test which is NOT hard at all. Once pharmacology ends, you will still be talking about medications as it pertains to your patients as well as lecture.
Hey guys! Check your email! They have sent (yet another) email that you need to respond to for confirming your attendance at orientation. Also included is a some wonderfully redundant math problems that you MUST HAVE COMPLETED by the first day of orientation. Don't worry, its only 300 problems.......REALLY glad I didn't have to take a math proficiency exam for this...oh wait.....
Hey everyone ! I wanted to thank everyone for their kindness and support that you all have shown me and each other on this thread and journey.I found out on Friday that I was accepted to my first school of choice so I will be retracting my acceptance from mt sac. I wish everyone the best of luck and can't wait to join the nursing sister/brotherhood with you all in 2017! Remember the journey will be difficult and there will be times that you will want to throw in the towel but that's when you lean on eachother for support and encouragement and remember exactly why you started this journey. Sending you my love and positive vibes my future nursing friends. God bless you all... I'll catch you on the other end :)
