Monroe College in Bronx ny

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I recently got accepted to Monroe College for the fall 2020 nursing program, I haven’t seen recent reviews about the school and I want to make sure I’m making the right decision. Has anyone attended the school, or graduated?

Im not looking to put all my eggs into one basket so I’m still applying for other schools as well.

Thank you :)

Thank you I’m trying to get into any accredited school from here to NJ even considering going the lpn route and bridging

I saw your comment. nevermind

To anyone currently in the ABSN program. Is there a online/ hybrid option or is it all in person?

Hi everyone who have gone ahead, I too considering Monroe College and have many questions. Can anyone from previous Cohorts wish to share their experience? Where did you do clinicals, what good/bad challenges did you all encounter?

I am anticipating accelerated nursing degree and is excited, but curious.

@Jan hyman I urge you to find a different school. I did my LPN and my 1st semester RN. I'm a straight-A student, I do not recommend this school. You will have no clinical experience, left alone to teach yourself, very outdated professors, an unorganized schedule, and apparently this semester they are having students travel to school to take online exams that can be proctored online. But since the professors are not tech-savvy and as per usual make things complicated. This is what they thought would be best. Parking is nonexistent, you have to pay at the parking garage. This is a for-profit school, you will spend a lot of money on outside resources and an outstanding amount of fees. Do not let the "It's a fast program and cheap" you will be disappointed. I recommend excelsior college and Nassau community college. Stay far away from BCC, Westchester has a good program as well.

Many students from my cohort have failed or left because of how chaotic the school is. If you do so happen to have a clinical day (I literally had one day my entire college career), they send you very far to travel because no hospital wants to work with them. Other colleges in the area have no problem getting their students to local facilities.

Excelsior. No way. Stick with Monroe. You will definitely be teaching yourself at Excelsior. Monroe has more passes too. Too many if's with Excelsior. There is no clinical there. Just a strict test out. Small things cause a fail. I do hope their CPNE is better now. I am sure the wait is long for it also.

I’m in monroe ABSN right now. The truth is the ABSN program is on the back burner they focus way more on the progressive program. Reason why is because their lpn-RN NCLEX pass rate is like 99% so that’s what they care about.
And yes the stuff that @Jan hyman said is true. However, Monroe is a very “lenient” program. For example, if you want to change your clinical site you can switch with someone. That is literally not even allowed at any other program LOL so IDK why/how they do it. Other little things like you can wear nail polish, you get blueprints for exams, and the scheduling of classes is very good. Example: all my Monday classes have started at 12/1pm, also there are asynchronous classes mixed in with the regular ones. Now they do the bare minimum when it comes to clinicals. They do seem to have an issue with sites because if BMCC associates program has some clinicals at Bellevue …how can monroe not get sites ? IDK. But yes there is 0 emphasis in the ABSN on clinical and it’s not because of COVID. Also yes they are very disorganized, every school is, but they are disorganized over things they have knowledge of which is weird.  For example, I know people that have gone to monroe and they have had the same exact issue with certain clinical sites like jacobi but they continue to go there …or attempt to go there because no one actually successfully goes to clinical smh.
the teachers are probably imo the main issue. They aren’t mean or anything they just don’t like to or don’t care to teach. (There are 2 AMAZING professors and you will know one for sure if you go to monroe.) They have the same professors teaching the progressive and ABSN so these professors are using the same plan to teach a 3 year program as a 4 semester program. It’s a mess. You HAVE TO teach yourself for certain classes.
like I said monroe is lenient but because of that it’s easy to slack off so you have to stay on it.

@mulaniani

When It comes to Monroe especially with my experience, the school itself schedules your classes based on what classes you need to take, so the time and day is fixed on what they give you..not what you chose.

I absolutely DO NOT believe you should teach yourself when it comes to basic knowledge that the students should learn as a nurse.

Now, will any school teach you everything? No, but things like, EKG interpretations, ABGs, lab values, and other basic teachings should of been taught to me and my cohort but was not..after graduation and classes was done for the semester, I used UWorld and I was so shock of all the basic information I wasn’t taught and when I took my NCLEX I was so happy I did use UWorld to learn things that I didn’t..because I would of failed it and many of the student have.

If you look at the stats posted.. the passing rate of NCLEX went down 2021.

I guess I’m one of the few “lucky” ones who actually did get to go on the clinical floor at Jacobi.
I can agree about the professors; some are amazing and will truly go above and beyond then there are others who should probably find another way to pay their bills. For example, my cohort was taught EKG interpretations, ABGs, as well as other lab values and other topics  (even though it definitely does take some self study to master them), yet I know for a fact other cohorts with a different professor were not taught all of the same things. No cohesiveness among the professors because those in the same program (progressive, accelerated, etc.) should be learning the same things.

So it looks Monroe is finally starting to improve their teaching and you all were able to reap the benefits from it, excluding me and my cohort.

Good for you ??

yes, agree 100%. in the accelerated, you are rushed and the focus is not on clinical or going to the sim lab. the focus is to pass exams and prepare to take the NCLEX. yes, we went to the sim lab but only for like 3-4 weeks and for 10 minutes each time. I am towards the end of the program and have never been shown IVs, we briefly spoke about EKGs in the sim lab but never in class, for maternity we are really missing out big time that's a whole other story...Monroe really can use their simulation lab way more even to practice skills.

I have been told we can't go to the sim lab to practice but then ill see the LPNs in there practicing for a class time (which is like 2 hours LOL) but I get it bc our program is rushed, to begin with. another issue is they have professors that should be switched with clinical instructors because they are not good at teaching..simply put
