Mom already took me to the doctor, but what's your take on this?

I think i've seen at least 3 or 4 kids today that have come in with issues that were present at home for x number of days, went to the doctor and then came to me anyway to see if I had the same opinion as the doctor.

I think i need an increase in salary.

Yes. Or "Mom is taking me to the doctor today." So....how can I help then?

This goes hand in hand with "I hurt myself this weekend and I can't move my hand, but my mom wanted me to come see you and see what you think." Gah! I don't even want to get involved in this injury because you didn't hurt yourself at school!!

Also, do they think we have x-ray vision. And even if we did, it is out of our scope of practice to interpret said x-ray and diagnosis anything.

Or how about, "Will you please check Snowflake? He started coughing this morning and I'd like to see if you think he needs to go to the doctor." I check said snowflake; no history of respiratory difficulties, no fever, no coughing while in clinic, sat 99%, lungs clear all fields. I tell mom I think it's fine to wait and see how it goes. Mom arrives at 12:30 to pick Snowflake up; he has a doctor's appointment.

When I first started as a school nurse if freaked me out when I realized how much Little Darlings and parents "power" (for a lack of a better word at the moment) to what I said. Now, after 10(+) years, I have learned how to work that to my advantage and for my Little Darlings.

They do so when it's convenient to them.

Sometime, especially with the little ones, I take "My doctor said (or even my mommy said), but I wanted to check with you" as a vote of confidence and trust. Other times, namely when parents try to use me instead of taking a kid to the doctor, it's annoying! And, X-ray eyes or not, we all need a raise!

I'm not a school nurse but this is not a question that pertains to just being at school. It's a teaching moment for the parents to tell them you are not allowed to diagnose an illness. Not within a nurse's scope of pratice. I can do some vitals and suggest based on those and some experience that you may or may not want to see the doctor. Other than that the choice is up to them to see the doctor about an issue.

"Ms. Amethya. I have a bruise."

Oh, what happened? Did you fall today?

"No, this happened yesterday afternoon, when I got home from school. I fell on my knee." Shows two old bruises.

Did you tell mom?

"Yes, she knows."

Okay, because these are old bruises, I can't really help you, baby. *Gives simple explanation what bruises are* So ice only helps when it's a new bruise, not old, because you already have the damage. All you got to do is let it fix itself, it's going to hurt, but it'll take a while.

*Students leaves*

*Calls mom, mom didn't know and assumes he fell outside when he was playing with his little brother. Mother was nice and was going to check on him later today.*

-Next day-

"Mommy told me it looks fine, but can you check again to make sure it's fine?"
