Microbiology: Spring 2010

Published

Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.

What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.

I think it will be a great semester! :yeah:

Hey there... I start Micro in a few weeks and Im also using the Bauman text at Santa Fe Community College. I'll also be taking A&P 2 so I'll have no life for the next semester...

The Bauman book seems readable and interesting after having perused it. Have any of you started Micro using this text? If so- are you enjoying the text? What kinds of lab projects have you done? Im looking forward to playing with petri dishes...

Hey I am also taking Micro this semester. I start on Jan 19. My text is Microbiology: Principles and Explorations by Black. What do you guys think is the hardest part of the class? I keep hearing that it's really hard but no one ever explains how! But this thread is a great idea we can all help each other out through the semester!

I just took micro last semester and my book was also Intro by Totura. If anyone goes to OCC in michgan PM me if you want.

Yay!!! I am so glad that someone started a blog about Micro!!! I am sooooo nervous about taking it because I have always heard horror stories about it! I am taking it at TWU in Denton, TX. Maybe we can all help each other through it. Does anyone know if it would be feasible for me to take Micro and Chem at the same time?

Hello everyone!

Hello Lev_Lady. I have taken Chemistry, and found it to require a good bit of studying. If you can devote many hours a week for study then I would say it is feasible. I see that Micro involves some chemistry too. Good luck with whatever you choose. We are here for you.

Since I haven't taken it yet I am not fully sure. However, I will take a stab at your question. I believe the hardest part is metabolism, DNA replication and immunology. Also remembering details and names of certain microbes etc.

Why is micro hard? I think a lot depends on the teacher. Our class was straight

notes, no handouts, no powerpoints the whole semester. Even with notes, we

were not given a clue as to what to we should study for to do well on the test.

The material was covered, but with no instruction on how to apply it. When the

test came, it was multiple choice, fill in the blank, mystery section,(a bunch of

problems, you need to perform an action, draw a picture, etc), and essays.

Many problems on the test were seen for the first time, no homework or

anything to give us a practice shot before the test. Non-lab class. There were

10 people left at the final exam.

I am taking Micro this semester. I am using the textbook by Tortora also. However I am taking it online and will have no real benefit of a professor. I made it through A&P I & II online so I pray that I make it through this as well. I hope that we can help each other.

Happy New Year everyone,

I am also taking Micro this semester, my first class is on Tuesday... Yikes! We are using Microbology a Systems Approach. My teacher has great reveiws on ratemyprofessor.com and a former classmate recommended her as well. I am anxious and nervous to get started. I started reading my text and it was interesting so far..hopefully it will remain so. I have already mentally prepared myself for a challenging semester and committed to more hours of studying this semester.

Good Luck to everyone

Ok I am taking a new prof and no longer need the Tortora text. Anyone going to VCC pm me so we can compare profs, notes, etc. :)

My Micro with Lab starts on the 19th, and I've got the same text. Did you check out the website that is associated with the book? It's on the inside cover. It's got quizes, outlines, flashcards, and additional resource links to check out on the internet.
