Hey guys,
I decided late that I wanted to start pre-nursing next semester, and now most of the classes are full. The only one I've been able to get into thus far is Microbiology. However, the professor has AWFUL ratings on rate my professor. She's described as "awful, simply awful" and people say they "wouldn't recommend her to anyone." This is super frightening to me, because I haven't taken math or science since high school (5 years ago). Anyone else been in a similar situation? I don't want to wait until spring to begin, but right now it's looking like that may be the case.

Do yourself a favor and don't take her class! I had the same experience with Chemistry and I thought to myself "how bad can he really be?" and it turned out he was just exactly how he was described on RMP. I busted my butt to pass the class because all he did was drink ice tea and tell stories about riding motorcycles.

Does the professor have any positive ratings on RMP? Micro isn't an easy class and some people think it is the professor when it is really the material. I took Bio with a teacher that had mixed reviews, some bad, some good and it was a great class.

I'm not really sure what to think of that site. I'm currently taking Sociology and English, my Sociology professor had terrible reviews, I'm mean just awful! My English professor, he was the opposite, awesome reviews, everyone loved him....Well, my experience so far has been that my Soc. prof. is GREAT! I'm loving her class, she's got everything so organized and easy to follow (both classes are online) I feel like my brain is really being made to THINK. My English professor on the other hand, not so great...Everything is SO disorganized, due dates are constantly changing and by the looks of the discussion board, people are having a very hard time figuring out just what the heck is going on. Unless he does some kind of miracles with his IN class classes I really don't see where the heck all those good reviews are coming from

RMP is like using wikipedia, it has unverified information. I didn't know about it until my last semester when my Human growth and Dev professor started talking about his ratings, so I looked him and my other professors up and found most of their ratings were far below average. Based on the reviews I should have failed every single course, yet my college GPA stands at 4.0.
Take in RMP ratings as entertainment only.

I took a micro lab class with this one teacher that got very bad ratings on RMP bc he was the only one that had any openings left (I wonder why). Day one I dropped his class, everything that students said about him on RMP was true. I use RMP alot when choosing my classes. But with that said, sometimes you need to take what students say on there with a grain of salt.
Usually I take RMP ratings with a grain of salt. That being said, I just finished up my fourth year of college, and the only time I had a professor that I didn't like, it was one I'd chosen with bad reviews on RMP. It wouldn't matter to me as much if I were still working on my other degree, but pre-nursing is scary since it's still possible that you won't be accepted to the nursing school... I guess that's my hesitation. I have a 3.6 GPA right now from my old degree (I added a new program instead of graduating in order to keep receiving federal funds), so I can't get anything but A's to be considered.
AHHHHH! Well, thanks for the help, guys! I'm crossing my fingers that another class opens up.

Its kinda a crapshoot either way: everyone has a different learning and teaching style. Sometimes they don't mesh. Take things as they come. I sure wouldn't let a website dictate my schedule.
It definitely doesn't dictate my schedule. There are enough classes at a massive school like GSU to allow a site like RMP to be one small variable in my decision. That being said, I guess I've never really seen SUCH an awful review of a professor. I want to know that the tests will come from the material actually being taught and that I've studied. I don't mind difficult professors in the slightest - I love being challenged. I do mind those who really don't understand how to teach undergrad classes, though.
Thanks for the constructive help, guys! I'm still on the fence, but I'm reserving a spot just in case the A+P lab I'm eyeing doesn't open up in time. :)

What I did was ask alot of students on campus what professor they took and who they would recommend or not. If alot are saying one paticular professor is horrible trust me don't take that class. Just my two cents.

Keep in mind that on RMP, people are more likely to moan and groan about an instructor than they are to sing their praises. People love to vent online but don't often post positive things.
Really good point! Definitely keeping it in mind. And I WANT to like her. I'm already planning on studying my butt off for this class, anyway. Hopefully the folks with these negative views just really hadn't intended to be challenged like they were. Maybe they didn't have a resource like this forum to help flesh out what nursing school is truly like.
