Hey guys,
I decided late that I wanted to start pre-nursing next semester, and now most of the classes are full. The only one I've been able to get into thus far is Microbiology. However, the professor has AWFUL ratings on rate my professor. She's described as "awful, simply awful" and people say they "wouldn't recommend her to anyone." This is super frightening to me, because I haven't taken math or science since high school (5 years ago). Anyone else been in a similar situation? I don't want to wait until spring to begin, but right now it's looking like that may be the case.
Thanks for your constructive thoughts, Tyler77. I actually have quite a few years under my belt in the professional world, and, while it may not be in nursing, I am fully aware that the HR department is not my mommy. That being said, when it comes to my education and my actually having an opportunity to pass a class and get a foot in the door, I feel I have the right to be a bit concerned. This was never a question of "meanness," which I explained earlier in the post. Rather, this particular professor had been known to put material on the tests that was never discussed in the class nor in the book. :)
I do totally feel prepared to tackle bitterness, and I understand that it's not all rainbows and butterflies. Despite it all, I'm incredibly excited!
I no longer visit that ratings site once I figured out that they are skewed in their presentation of ratings. Whenever an instructor doesn't like what is in a rating, all they have to do is to contact RMP, and the rating will be removed. Then what point is there in considering what gets through the censorship? I would wait to take this course with a different instructor if I were you.

What! The teachers can do that?! And I agree with you, if it were me I would take it with a different teacher.
And also as a side note to other posters: The orginal poster isnt looking for a easy way out at all, she is just wanting to know what type of teaching style she will have to deal with, with her teacher and there isnt anything wrong with that. Hell, we all know miroc, A+P etc...isnt going to be easy but some teachers teach differently, making it harder to understand the subject and some teachers are just plain....well you get the point.
I also was scared when I read reviews on RMP. To be honest, some of them that were rated poorly I absolutely loved, and others I found were awful too. You never know who is writing those reviews. It could be a student who doesn't put in the time or effort and is bitter towards the teacher because of their grade. I found that if you put in enough time and effort into studying for any class that you can do good. The only real critiques that I take to heart are from students that I know treat school just as seriously as me and when they struggle in the class then I stay away! Sometimes you don't have that option if your on a deadline though. Overall, I don't think RMP is always an accurate non-bias source.
Yes, I have also been in that situation. All of my Profs had bad ratings, and a couple of them actually deserved it. I still managed to get my A though! What this usually means is that the class is going to be actual work and many people are not up for it. Dont let it scare you away unless you feel that you cant make the time commitment. Microbiology was not easy, my class had 10 people left for the final exam. My class formed a class-action style complaint with the Dean over my micro teacher, but the handful of us who focused on the content and forged ahead got the A's!
I've seen bad reviews based on the sexual appeal of an instructor. Generally speaking bad reviews don't come from students that get an 'A', it is from people that are unhappy with the grade they EARNED and want to displace the blame on anything and everything other than themselves. Yes, there are bad instructors out there, but they get weeded out through complaints. All of my science teachers had bad reviews and they were the best classes I've taken.

Breezy7,
Wait till you go out there in the real world and deal with misearable, bitter, catty nurses. You can't walk to HR and ask "Can I have a transfer out of Nurse Smith's Dept. She's mean!"
Good luck, kiddo. Welcome to the real world.
