Just bought my micro book today, so thought we needed to have a thread.
Classes start August 22. When do yours start?
What text are you using? We're using Tortora.
And are you taking lab too? Our lab is worth 2 credits, and I've heard with the amount of work you need to do, it should be more.

I start Microbiology next Monday so I guess that officially makes me Pre-Nursing! We're using Tortora 8th. I got it on half.com for $75.00 and it's the International Edition but the reviews promise that the material is the same page for page.
I took 2 semesters of Micro in my undergrad 10 years ago and I'm hoping I can access the information buried somewhere deep in my noggin!
Being more mature (in my humble opinion) this time around I plan on actually reading most of the text. Chapter One seemed like familiar territory, already.
Unfortunately, the only class that fits in with my day job is 50 miles away, 2 nights a week. What a time for gas prices to skyrocket!
I also start on Monday and am using Totora's 8th edition that I got on half.com for $75 (international ). I'm waiting for it to arrive. I bought my A&P Tortora book the same way last semester. It also was the international edition and it was just fine. Sure beats the school bookstore's extortion rates!
I'm doing both lecture and lab online.
Went in to my first lab today and it turned out it was class was cancelled for the day. For some reason they decided that no labs would start until the second class of the week, which is Wednesday for me. Ooh. :angryfire And they made no effort notify us. Email anyone? At least part of the class might have found out. I'm not far from the community college (less than 10 minutes by car) but it was an hour and a half by bus there and back.

Sorry about your lab... that is terrible that they didnt have it posted somehow that labs would be starting a week later. I would be highly ticked off if I were in that situation! I know our labs are running this week because I have stayed in contact with my A&P lab instructor and he was talking about his new labs starting. I have lab wednesday night... should be interesting!
Last night was the first lecture... lots of information but at the same time I didnt find it overwhelming. Maybe it is because I took A&P over the summer with from what i have been told the worst professor? Dont know... seems like the way the teacher does the course is pretty straight forward and comparing it to the other classes I have had it almost feels like the material is hand fed to us. She repeats what she wants us to write down several times, etc... BUT... until you get that first test you just never know what to expect!!!
Good luck to everyone else starting out! Tonight I have my Ethics class...

I found NEster on Ebay and paid $80- that included the shipping- you should check it out!
Just curious... did the book you got online have the CD and study guide that was recommended with it? I have checked online and have found a couple pretty good deals but none of them have the CD which it sounds like she really wants us to have...
Today is my second class. We started with history of micro Monday. So far it seems OK. We don't have a lab this week. How is everyone else doing?
We don't start classes until 9/7 (a Wed), but my first class isn't until 9/8. I've been reading the book though and taking notes. I'm *hoping* this helps somewhat, and that we actually DO use the book (didn't even CRACK my A&P2 book - a waste of $167! Every lecture was a PPT presentation.) and that we go in order of the chapters. I hate it when they skip all over the place.
I also wish the syllabus was available. I hate getting it the day of class, instead of before.
Lecture was yesterday and lab was today. It feels overwhelming, but I keep on reminding myself that I can do it. It seems like alot of information with a lot of tests and quizes. Luckily, we'll be getting lecture notes online and study questions for both lecture and lab quizes and tests. I'll just have to squeeze everything in there.
I was wondering if people who have already started found their class crowded. I knew that the fall semester is always busier, with more students than the spring, but had gotten used to how quiet our campus was during the summer session. In lecture, we were one student away from being standing room only. It will be interesting to see how many students last.
Lab is much smaller, only 12/13 students, all women. It's much smaller since it is not a required course for the ADN program, though it is for the BSN.

Keep your head up Malia! Professors have a way of throwing a lot at you the first class... it will get better!!!
My lecture was Monday and lab last night. The lecture class is very full... although generally speaking my experience has been that the classes will get less full as time goes on between people dropping the class or just not showing up. You should see a drop off in the fullness of the parking lot too! We did not have 2 desks the other night for students in lecture... and I think there were 1 or 2 students absent as well. One of my other classes has a sign that says "max occupancy 29 people" in it and we had 27 students plus the instructor... talk about cutting it close! And we had a bunch of students absent that night. The professor was told "Generally you will not keep 30 students or more in your class after all the drops, etc are made"
I dont know what to make of my lab instructor. She started out pretty cool but then turned into a little to controlling for me. After we finished our exercises (pretty easy stuff) our group asked if we could take a break (they have this wooden stools to sit on that are very uncomfortable!) and she said sure... be back in no more than 5 minutes. This is almost a 3 hour class... a 5 min break is not really long enough esp if everyone leaves the class at the same time to head for the restrooms or vending machines. It will take a bit for me to get used to her class I guess... and boy did I get spoiled with my lab professor from the summer. He basically let us work at our own pace and would answer questions for us, etc... but we did our own thing without it being pushed at you constantly. I know that is not the norm.. but gosh it was nice!!!!
Well, my semester just began on 8/22 and we are using Nester, Anderson, etc. Microbiology, A human perspective. I am excited because this professor is also teaching the A&P I class that I am taking. So, one professor, 2 courses. How cool is that? Well anyway, I wish everyone good luck that is taking Micro this semester and let's continue being helpful and encouraging to one another. :)
