Microbiology - Fall 2005

Published

Just bought my micro book today, so thought we needed to have a thread.

Classes start August 22. When do yours start?

What text are you using? We're using Tortora.

And are you taking lab too? Our lab is worth 2 credits, and I've heard with the amount of work you need to do, it should be more.

I'm taking micro and physiology (again, 1st time I took it I got an A but didn't learn ANYTHING, the instructor just said memorize this and you'll get an A...) this semester. Our micro book is Tortoro also, but I haven't purchased it yet...maybe today if I can get away from work :( I'm in West Plains, Mo, where is everyone else located at? Our lab is only worth 1 hr too....

I'm in Columbia, MO! I took Microbiology in the spring...but taking the lab this fall, starting August 22nd. My book was also Tortoro. I buy all my books off Ebay, it's MUCH cheaper than the bookstores.

I have to say I really enjoyed Microbiology, but it will turn you into a germaphobe!

I am also taking it this fall, it is the prerequisite to officially matriculate into my RN to BSN program. How I have wished over the years that I had taken it as part of my ADN, but it wasn't required and I took gerontology courses instead. MISTAKE!!!

I am in upstate NY, am taking the course online, but have to go to campus for the lab. Hopefully I have learned something about microbes in these years of nursing, and it will be more interesting than boring....we can hope right? I am using the foundations in microbiology book by talaro also. New it was $140, and I couldn't find it any cheaper online, since it is 5th edition. I saw many dirt cheap 4th editions though! I was able to get a used copy at the bookstore, but it was still over $115. What a racket that book business is!

I am also taking pharmacology this semester - online also.

Good luck to everyone!

Book prices are amazing! I think the used version of my book is $108 and that doesnt include the lab book which is almost another $100... top off that by taking 3 other classes and the cost of books is just about as much as my tuition!

Where in upstate are you at capgirl? I was going to be moving up that way last summer (all my family is in the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid area) and would have gone to North Country for my ADN (although you have to get your LPN first)...

Hi glimmer, I will be taking this class at Hudson Valley - I am in the Capital District... Lake Placid is so beautiful - but far too COLD for me...

I'm at Ohio University Zanesville and will be taking micro starting Sept 6th, I don't know what book or books yet but I called the bookstore and was told there were 2 of them both over 120.00 each. I'm also taking foundations in nursing 1, nursing communcation, nursing assessment 1 and pharmacology 1, all of these courses are required for the first quarter of nursing at OU-Z. When I added up the cost of all the books I need , 6 just for foundations in nursing, it will cost over $700.00 for the first quarter.:angryfire

Does anyone know where on-line you can get books without having to use a credit card or a checkcard? I don't have one they got me in trouble be4!:crying2:

Rob

I'm in Las Vegas, Comm. College of Southern Nevada. Start Micro on Sept 6th. Lab is ZERO credits. Lect is 4 credits. Got the prof I wanted! Were using Nester's Micro book. Got it new on Ebay for $70 incl shipping!

I know a lot of sellers on Ebay will allow you to pay by money order. Here's your only challenge...

You need to be able to buy it right away to allow for mailing of your money order and their shipping time to get the books to you. Look for the books that the auction is ending within the next couple of days and be on top of it when the auction is ending. I don't usually bid until near the end and make my "max bid" an odd dollar amount. Be ready to bid again in the lst minute if necessary. If the book is up to $60 and you are willing to pay $85 plus shipping costs, I would bid something odd like $85.56. Sometimes you luck out and someone else bids it up to 85.50. That's why I always add the extra odd cents.

Also, make sure they aren't shipping via "media mail". Although it's cheaper, it could take a month to get to you. Look for sellers near your area to speed up shipping times.

Also, make sure you are buying the correct edition of the book! I wouldn't worry too much about if they have highlighting, etc. Sometimes it's done in a way that helps you.

Good luck!

I hope this wasn't confusing!

I'm taking Micro this fall also. I got my book today (used at $112, vs. $150 for the new one!) and we're using Tortora. They were out of the lab manuals, so I was going to reserve a copy, but the bookstore cashier said that they're just photocopies the Bio dept. puts together, and it's only $2 (woohooo! The cheapest thing yet!) or so. So because it takes me over an hour to get to school, and with the price of gas WAY more than $2, I told them I'd just pick one up the first day of class, which is September 8th.

After Micro, I'll be all done and can re-enter the nursing program. I took leave last spring when I had to take 16 credits. Couldn't handle that with impending divorce, 4 kids, 5 day a week school schedule, and a 1 1/4 hour commute one way. It put my schooling at an additional year, but I ended up getting 4.0 in my other classes, which I know I couldn't have done otherwise.

I'm glad this class is only 2x a week, from 8:30-9:30 (lab), then 9:30 to 10:45 (lecture). I'm glad I got the earlier lab, otherwise I'd have to hang around until 1pm for the later lab. I end up at the mall or a sporting goods store, spending waaaayyyyy too much money! LOL

I'm anxious to get started reading it. I've been spending the bulk of my summer with Med/Surg 1 notes and books (from the syllabus I got before I deferred for a year). It's getting B-O-R-I-N-G!!

The A&P2 board in the Spring? Yes - I think that was where it was from. I just remembered your signature and some of the details you mentioned above made me really think so ;)

Anyway - glad to hear you are on track.

After miserably failing my first A&P2 exam, I came back to get a 4.0. Believe that nonsense?? I just about fell over when I got my grades in the mail!

Is anyone else actually getting excited about school starting? And I don't mean for your kids ;) The finanacial aid office finally pulled through and got my loan processed so tomorrow I can go get my books for AP3 and Psych 2 - already got the Micro book.

Anyway - just don't want our thread to get buried. We will be using it a lot soon - I am sure.

Bye,

Traci

Im excited but at the same time im not. This will be my last semester of pre-reqs which makes me very happy and I cant wait to get them done and out of the way. At the same time I wish I had more time before semesters (I just finished summer semester 8/1) because I had major knee surgery 8/2 and have gotten NOTHING done... i dont have books or anything yet. Just a little nerve wrecked over this... plus I have to go and figure out parking arrangements soon since I just realized the other day that one of my classes is in a building not directly on campus and normally they have you walk across the road to get to... hmmm... 2 weeks ago today the sawed off part of my bone and screwed it down somewhere else... me thinks I wont be walking that far! LOL

In general though I cant wait for the semester to start!
