Microbiology - Fall 2008

Published

Hi ya'll! Anybody taking Micro this coming fall semester and want to form a study group? I did this for A&P I and II and it helped tremendously! I'm taking it along with Chem 1151 (Survey of Chem). Thanks!

Congrats LongIslandNurseDream!!!!!!!!!!!! You did it!!!!!!!

Ok, so this is not microbio related...ok, so it sort of is by default I guess but anyways...for you guys starting nursing school, what is your program's MMR requirement? Are the 2 shots you got as a kid sufficient? My school isn't very specific and I don't want to get bitten in the butt when I go to orientation. Thanks!

I know how you feel. I am taking Micro, Health Assessment, Intro to Prof. Nursing and Speech. I am always swamped. Health Assessment and Micro alone are enough to keep me busy. But in January I will start my first clinical rotation. I am both excited and scared to death. I cannot wait until Micro and Micro Lab is over. I just took my third test today. Now I just have take the final on Dec. 11 and the lab final on Dec. 3. Good luck all!!!!!

I got a 105 on Micro test- (highest grade in the class) I thought I did Horrible...God is blessing me in every single way.

Well I took Psychology- what a horrible test!!!! and I told the professor that too LOL- It is not fair! let's see what Happens!

I'm going off to bed...I need to rest.

Have a great Night ladies! and thanks for all the Support! I love this website!

Melanie

We had our second lab test last week and I got my grade back today. A 95!!. Which means I don't have to take the optional lab final on Thursday. Yeah!!!!! The next several weeks of lecture are going to be crazy so I'm glad we're done with lab.

Mel!! WOOHOO ON THE 105!!! thats insane!!! good for you i knew youcould do it! im sorry about Psych was it that bad? ouch!

My dna test is on Saturday im studying for it now. And i TOTALLY feel you on the science becoming my expertese!!! i got an A in bio 109, B in Bio 110 and hoping for the A in micro..here's hoping!!!

In terms of the MMR shot, The ones i got as a kid were sufficient, tho the tetnus i had to get and my 3rd hep shot. For some reason, it wasnt in my file that i got one earlier on so i had to get another. I also got a PPD done as well. The way my dr. did it was she made me get blood work to see what i was immune to, THEN, she gave me the rest of the vaccines that i needed. Ill know more next wed..(orientation) ill let you know if i find out before you do. Good luck!

Good Luck on DNA!!! Saturday is my 26th b- day and i'll be thinking of you and bring you tonsssss of luck:redpinkhe!!!!!! Yeah Psychology was bad- me make us write notes from his class so we spend 3 hours writing every single word he says and make us read the book which confuses students even more. After the test, I felt like walking out of the class..that's how upset I felt. Maybe I was too tired from all this $$$hit.

Rach..are you going for associates or bachelor's- cause I got Accepted to the BSN which requires me 1 more Chem- History and Philosphy. I'll be ready for Clinicals in the fall.

Congratulations Girl! you are so lucky you don't have to have a Final! We rock!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have my comprehensive lab final tonight:uhoh3:, wish me luck! I'm just hoping I can remember a semester's worth of info. I've been studying a bunch though so I think I should be ok. Good luck to everyone else who's gearing up for tests and finals!

Hey Mel,

Actually, its neither :( the school i am going to allows you to sit for the RN NCLEX exam once the program is over so basically its only a degree program, but i too begin clinicals in Sept. But, i have already taken philosophy, history but havent taken college chem. I will go right from this to a BSN accelerated program i think its 8 months part time. so ill do that. Initially i was going to go to ANY school that accepted me and i applied to ans's and bsn's and degree it just so happened this was the school i tried SO hard to get into and they took me so i didnt take any other offers (most of the rest rejected me anyway)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SISTA!!! I NEED THOSE LUCK VIBES!!! My 27th birthday is Jan 13th but ill be happily in nursing school and in pharmacology class to be exact that day!!! lol, (I HOPE!!!)

I begin on Jan 5th and take up, intro to nursing, math for meds and pharm..then im done April 17. THEN...I get the ENTIRE summer off cause i finished nurtirion, anthro and another sociology so i get the entire summer off from april 17 to Sept. that will be good for reading..ALOT for the upcoming semester!Sorry about your psych test honey!!!! but youll be fine keep on psuching hard you can do it!!

CAN anyone help? please tell me about "RESTRICTION ENZYMES" and explain "sticky ends' PLEASE!! tHANK YOU so much!!!

My school insisted in titers. They really didn't care if you had just had your shots yesterday or had them 20 years ago. They wanted to see titers showing you have immunity to MMR. So check with your school and make sure that immunization records will be sufficient.

Rachel

Restriction endonucleases (enzymes) are usually found in viruses and they are used to insert viral DNA into the host cell. They "clip" the host's DNA at a specific location after recognizing certain sequences so they can attach theirs, but it usually leaves the "sticky ends", which are basically just the double-helix structure that hasn't been snipped all the way across. Imagine if you uncoiled the DNA and then cut only one side instead of all the way across...you'd be left with a section of dangly little nucleotides that aren't paired up. Those are the "sticky ends". Hope that helps, good luck on your test!

I have my presentation tomorrow on my microbe. I'm SO nervous! I absolutely dread speaking in front of people. Hope I don't throw up. lol.
