MCC - Nursing Students Starting 2009

U.S.A. Michigan

Hey everyone!

Thought I would start a thread where we can keep up with all the fun new and exciting things coming our way! We'll get to meet each other in a few days (May 20th)! So, how shall we identify ourselves to one another? Hum...

Anyway, look forward to meeting you all! I'm excited about the Nursing Orientation!

I didn't say to add in darts or anything, but there are things you can do to make all clothing look nicer and be subtle about it. Nothing makes someone stand out more than dumpy looking clothing, IMO.

My mom is a seamstress so I guess I can ask her what she can do to help the situation.

If the school didn't care what our uniforms looked like they wouldn't dictate which ones to buy. Nobody messes with the uniforms, I have never seen it done. I am very surprised that any instructor said to go ahead and "make it your own" or modify it.

I would assume that the best bet is to call the Nursing office at MCC and find out what they will or will not accept for sure.

I assumed that hemming of the pants would be ok? I'm 5'2" and the pants that I have are for someone 5'6" it seems. Dove has a special section for "tall" students, but us shorties are left out. I only have a 27 1/2" inseam (got piano legs! LOL). They are very long on me. I can only pull the waist up "Steve Urkel" high so much until it's cutting into my circulation... for lack of a better term.

Also, on a different topic.....I called the Macomb County Health Dept. and they said that the Hep B vaccines are $33 each, and you need (3). Total cost around $100. TB test through them is $8. Just incase anyone was looking into this....

Did they said anything about the other vaccines? I still haven't decided if I should try to use my insurance to get my immunity checked or just get the vaccines again.

Thank you so much for your opinion, I will be sure to take that into consideration.

I called the Wayne County HD, because their vaccines are only $10 each and they are out of the Hep B vax.

The scrubs that I bought from someone were slightly altered. Both pair are hemmed, and one of the tops is taken in. I am pretty sure that having clothing that is too big and baggy could end up being somewhat like hair that's long and hanging down. It is more likely to get yuck on it. If your pants are dragging on the floor that wouldn't be a good thing.

Maybe you just didn't know they were altered. I'm not saying do anything drastic like adding ties or pink lace, but taking them in in areas or shortening them is not a big deal. Many people in my class did, and no one would have had a clue if it wasn't mentioned. I was surprised when they said go ahead and add a cargo pocket, but haven't done it yet because that IS something I want to double check.

Yes, HEM YOUR PANTS! That's not even something to worry about! My pants were like 5 inches too long, and there was no way I would walk around like that. I used the iron on sticky stuff so it's not permenant. It was a easy quick fix. A couple girls rolled theirs up but it looked really sloppy.

Well either way, good luck next year. Never be afraid to ask questions, relax, and everything will be fine.

I altered mine to fit better and never had a problem. Lots of us have.

So cutting them down to booty short length is out? And embroidering my name in stitching across the bottom... that would be out too, I suppose... drats. :lol2:

Thanks for all the information!

Bow chicka bow wow! :lol2:

I need help with deciding which stethoscope to go with. I have been debating between the Littman Cardiac III and the Littman classic SE. I would really appreciate any input from current students and those of you that have already bought yours for the fall. I have read many previous posts on here about it and most say go with the Cardiac III but some say it is not necessary. In my opinion I would like to get a good one now so I don't have to buy another one later on, however I have also heard from many people that nurses and doctors walk off with them. I will be getting it engraved though. Thank you in advance for your help!!:D

I am upgrading mine from the lightweight to the Cardiac III. People seem happy with it and I figure it is an investment. It has a great sound quality. I know people who have the classic and like it too.

I haven't heard of doctors and nurses walking off with them, but I guess it is possible. We keep our on us at all times though, so it would be hard! Just don't leave it lying around and you have nothing to worry about!

I'm glad you all are talking about stethoscopes. I have no idea what is "best" and figured I would need the "best" one to hear heart sounds as I have no idea what to even listen for!
