What are the top medications that you hate to give and why?
Mine is Amphotericin B (called "Ampho-terrible" at my hospital).
Anything that can't mix with Normal Saline makes me nervous. It makes me wonder what's going to happen when it gets into the vein--isn't blood a fairly salty environment?
Not really a med, but so many G-tube formulas for kids stink like vomit to me (sorry...) and so do a lot of baby formulas! HOW do the kids drink that stuff?? I don't get it :)
Definitely! Pregestamil and Neocate are the two we use for babies with GI issues - they are both broken down with enzymes already, so yeah, they basically already smell like regurgitated formula.
The worst was the time I was feeding a baby Neocate (mixed to 27cal/oz, no less) who vomited on me - it got down my scrub top, actually pooled IN MY BRA. :barf01:
For me it's got to be Docusate caplets. They would be the easiet thing to take if you can swallow the gel caps but we have people who can so I have to puncture the tip, try to squeeze the content out and hope not to make a mess...
It's easier to snip off the end of the gelcap and squeeze it out vs. puncturing the tip. Get a pair of verrrry sharp scissors and snip off the end and it's much cleaner too.
Happy New Year!! :w00t:
I hate giving...
Ampho B - -
IV cellcept - - (PO cellcept I can live with).
OKT3 - can cause flash pulmonary edema, rigors etc.
Thymo - due to all of the premeds and midmeds (solu-medrol, tylenol and IV benadryl).
I also hate insulin gtts! and could care less if I ever give another supp. or enema!!! :chair:
It is also hard when you have patients with a NGT and spend a good part of the morning hunting down medications - - and figuring out which are available in elixar and which ones are not!!!!

:barf01: is right!!!! oh my goodness! I HATE the smell of Neocate! I didn't realize those were broken down with enzymes already, interesting.
yeah and I remember being subjected to pedialyte as a kid... quite disgusting if I recall correctly even then.
I'd written a post listing all the meds I hate......but lost it.
Basically things that make ya poop. Things that stink. Things that don't crush up nicely for feeding tube dosing (why oh why can't there be elixirs for everything, lol!!!)....I'll try the mixing in the syringe trick next time....
But my number one least fave is *Mannitol*. We don't get it in prefilled syringes. We have to draw it up from the vials. It is so hard to draw up that you have to keep changing needles because they'll crystallize......ugh, hate those crytals! I haven't had to give this since before I had RA symptoms (dumb luck) but am sure my day is coming. Oh my hands ache at the thought! LOL!

That's what I was told, and it makes sense. It certainly smells like it's already been semi-digested!
I have to mention this...I was close with the mom of a baby who went home on Neocate. She had a hard time getting it at the store, even if the pharmacy ordered it, and it was so expensive. So she ordered boxes of it on Ebay for half price - good to know if you send a baby home on it. But anyway, she tasted it one day...and she said that it tasted familiar and blushed. I asked WHAT it tasted like. After much prodding, she admitted that it tasted like...let's just say...ejaculate. :imbar

If Mannitol has crystals you shouldn't be using it. Crystals are simple to dissolve, cook the vials. Seriously, put them in a hot water bath for a full day. Better yet, they should be kept warm to prevent forming crystals to begin with.
My dog has Glaucoma. If her IOPs sky rocket she needs IV Mannitol and most vet ER clinics don't keep Mannitol on hand so I do. I keep a vial on hand and I store it on top of the frig. It is warm up there and keeps the vial quite crystal free.

I hate given anything narcotic or anything like Phenergan things like that to elderly people. It just makes them whig completely out.
