Meds you hate to give....

What are the top medications that you hate to give and why?

Mine is Amphotericin B (called "Ampho-terrible" at my hospital).

Anything that can't mix with Normal Saline makes me nervous. It makes me wonder what's going to happen when it gets into the vein--isn't blood a fairly salty environment?

Prevacid via peg tube. Those little hyprophobic balls never go down. Why they don't use a liquid substittue in my hospital baffles all.

Tikosyn--side effect of possible sudden death. Not a drug I want to give any time and certainly not as the patients first dose.

Normal saline is isotonic to blood...0.9%.

Has anyone ever read the PDR for lactalose? I had a doc read it to me once......caution may cause the bowels(or intestines..I can't remember which) to explode. OMG the things we give our patients. After I found that out I refused to ever be given it. It is actually on my list of allergies. LOL

I have never had to give Mag Sulfate, but had to receive it all during the last trimester of my pregnancy. It makes you puke and, because it is a smooth muscle relaxer, it makes you wet the bed when you puke. :imbar

Penicillin and all the derivatives make your pee smell.

I know nurses who don't use Lido when they give Rocephin IM to the patients who need it for STDs. This is mean and borders on abusive.

I hate giving Adenosine, too. Charcoal is nasty. I had it blow up on me and another nurse when we were putting it down an NG. I never laughed so hard. The other nurse was almost covered in Charcoal. ROFLMAO!

I like to wake up drunks with Ammonia. I also like the way Benzoin smells. Takes all kinds.:p

I hate to give insulin R on a sliding scale especiallly at

night...everyone is an individual... they fluctuate ..you worry you never know...

Good lord - I could have written this post myself! Only happened to me once and that was enough, now I too am nervous with a first-time dose of this. I take care of a cute little old lady, order for ambien 10 mg q hs. As I discovered later apparently she had taken it once and got "a little confused" so the genius nurses I work with just circled it on the MAR and held the med. I was off a few days when this happened, came back to work and saw this med was ordered but hadn't been given for a few days- no explanation why....of course, being an ordered med I gave it. After a horrible night with her including 2 falls [thankfully no broken bones] I called the doc, got the med d/c'd and passed along in report the reaction my normally sweet pt had to ambien. Imagine next me...going through the roof...as the oncoming nurse said "oh, I guess nobody told you she reacts poorly to that!" Why nobody bothered to get the med discontinued after the first reaction is beyond me.
