Meds you hate to give....

Updated:   Published

What are the top medications that you hate to give and why?

Mine is Amphotericin B (called "Ampho-terrible" at my hospital).

Anything that can't mix with Normal Saline makes me nervous. It makes me wonder what's going to happen when it gets into the vein--isn't blood a fairly salty environment?

Metamucil.............thru a G-tube!

sheri

ARGGHHH!!! hate metamucil...as a new student i tried to give it to a pt...mixed up carefully (not too much water, as per the pts. wishes), then the pt. refused to take it. I dumped it in the sink. As you can imagine, I caught supreme poop from the head nurse and my instructor the next day when I found out they had to call the plumber to unplug the clogged drain :imbar

Other than that, charcoal is at the top of my most despised list. I've wrecked more clothes at work than you can shake a stick at:(

If Mannitol has crystals you shouldn't be using it.

Yes, I know. Which is why it is frustrating to draw it up...it takes so long that crystals often start to form. But it's funny that I mentioned this yesterday...today I get to work and find my patient started on Mannitol. Since I'd last given in, our hospital has stopped providing it in the maddening vials, and we now have bags with filtered tubing. The bag is good for 24 hours. No crystals at ALL. We dedicated a line for it and flush it really, really, really well. I am very pleased, and every so thankful the change was made!

Specializes in Neonatal ICU (Cardiothoracic).

I hate giving Dopamine/Dobutamine/Calcium through peripheral lines to my babies......I have to watch them like a hawk.

I also hated giving go-lytely when I worked adult care. The pt would invariably never make it near the bathroom, prompting a code brown and hosing down from head to toe before the next wave.

Also hate AmphoB.........nasty looking crap.

I would rather give golytly than give an enema or remove an impaction yuchhhh.

have a new med called cyclocort or some thing like that that i have to give via peg and its little time released pellets and they will not go down the peg.Just stop it up

multiple eye gtts that you have to wait 3-5 minutes between or inhales that you have to wait 2-3 minutes between puffs(knowing full well at home they just went puffpuff....

Specializes in MICU, SICU.

I hate giving Proteinex, always per PEG, smells so nasty. About a month ago, I had the joy of getting a whole face-full of the stuff:eek: , when I accidentally turned the stopcock on the PEG the wrong way...yeah, real cute. Also can't stand giving Dopamine through a PIV, too scary!

LOL... I do that on myself... puff puff done!

I am a nightshifter...so anyone ever have an Ambien weekend at work?

Sweeter than pie old ladies that turn into raving lunatics...I am always just slightly hesitant when giving this to someone for the first time

Kwell

IM Bicillin

Steeroids (any route)

Benzodiazepines (any route)

Vancomycin

Mucomyst....ick.

I was drawing up Mucomyst the other day and something happened that it squirted in my face and all over the top of my shirt. I was so embarrassed...and momentarily stinky. I think I must have drawn up air into the syringe then inserted it into the bottle. I was talking, so who knows what I really did to make that happen.

Specializes in ER, ICU, L&D, OR.

I dont mind giving much of anything, though I do dislike giving Enemas of any type.

Cardizem and Corvert...b/c people sometimes try to die when you give them. ;)

I had to give both of these to a patient a few shifts ago and I think my heart rate was as fast as his

Specializes in Emergency room, med/surg, UR/CSR.
Oh yeah...forgot to put charcoal on my list ;)

Yeah, use to hate that too. I think housekeeping especially hates it cause they ended up cleaning it from every wall in the room when I tried to put it down an NG tube one night. LOL!!
