Meds you hate to give....

Updated:   Published

What are the top medications that you hate to give and why?

Mine is Amphotericin B (called "Ampho-terrible" at my hospital).

Anything that can't mix with Normal Saline makes me nervous. It makes me wonder what's going to happen when it gets into the vein--isn't blood a fairly salty environment?

We're trying to check about getting the liquid back. Especially since the prescription is for 2 horse caplets, 3 times a day, on top of the other stuff she takes.

I'd found the liquid multi-vitamin for her, so that eliminated one "pill".

There is K-Lor, which comes in powder form that you can mix with water/juice. It dissolves well. I believe this is what MNlpn was referring to.

Specializes in ICU, psych, corrections.

We give milk and molasses enema as well. There is one doctor in particular who LOVES to order them...bleeecchhh!! And boy, do they work!!! I can never eat gingerbread cookies again.............

Melanie = )

Specializes in Psych, M/S, Ortho, Float..

Anyone ever have to give IVIg? It is a blood product that comes in glass bottles, needs special tubing, premeds including lasix and requires q15 minute vitals for up to 4 hours. You also get to keep your other 4 patients as well. Thank Goodness for the foley!! You run this stuff at 15cc's an hour for 15 minutes, then up to 30cc/h, then 60. Once you finish that bottle, if the second bottle is from another batch, you have to start all over with the 15cc/hr. If any complications occur, you go right back down to 15cc/h!! Takes forever, and you get to look at your other patients and come right back. And I was working a 12 hour shift on my birthday.

What a nightmare!!!

Yep. Haven't had to administer IVIg where I currently work at....yet.

How bout the "Pink Lady Enemas"? We use those up here!

What's that?

Thanks for the link, Fluff. I was hoping, with eyes squeezed tight and fingers and toes crossed, that there was an alternative to forcing my 70 # LOLs to drink that whole gallon of stuff in 3 hours. :(

Actually, if you can get them to eat a whole bag of SF candy, it will work just about as well.

LOL.. sadly, the docs just won't write for that! :)

Not really a med, but so many G-tube formulas for kids stink like vomit to me (sorry...) and so do a lot of baby formulas! HOW do the kids drink that stuff?? I don't get it :)

Oh that reminds me, I cannot stand the smell of Ensure, especially vanilla flavored. Have you ever tried Pedialyte, Blech, very salty, I don't know how the kids drink this stuff either.

For me it's got to be Docusate caplets. They would be the easiet thing to take if you can swallow the gel caps but we have people who can so I have to puncture the tip, try to squeeze the content out and hope not to make a mess...

Specializes in floor to ICU.

Potassium IV- always burns/uncomfortable for the pat

Mucomist po (for Tylenol OD)- stinks, smells like Lilt perm solution

Phenergan and Mucomyst.
