Medically Disqualified

Hello all,

I just wanted to stop by and give an update. I received word today that I was medically disqualified for one time "bilateral kidney stone" event in 2005. It was a 2mm stone that was passed after 3 days of intense pain. Since then no problems/recurrences. 3 months ago I had my physician give me the "astronaut physical", LOL, which I passed with flying colors. My physician was surprised my resting pulse rate is 52 beats per minutes. At 44 years of age I am in excellent shape consistenly running and working out for 30 yrs. I had high hopes. But no waivers on this one. Oh well. Time to initiate plan B.

Good Luck to all. And thanks again for having me on your site.

Best of luck - and on to Plan B :) ~

sorry to hear about your benign event turning into a terminal result and you're not being able to enter into the military. Truly your skills would've aided many. Good Luck to you in your future endeavors.

Kudos to you for the taking of your time to apply and do all that is necessary to process in the quest to commission and of your willingness to devote yourself to the Soldiers defending our Country.

I'm surprised that they rejected you for that. Has your recruiter submitted a request for waiver? I have experience with the waiver issue. I had back surgery in 1983 and it took 22 years, a nursing degree and a lot of rejections, but I finally was granted a waiver. My back surgery seems like a greater risk of problem than your kidney stone. Especially since you passed it, no surgery. Make sure your recruiter has submitted a request to physical. That will get you to the MEPPS floor. Then when you physical you may get the medical disqualification. Once you get that it can be sent to the waiver board in Kentucky. Don't just let the recruiter stop you, there are a lot of recruiters that don't know what they're doing. I recently received my commission and I would be happy to give you the name of my recruiter. Very competent. If I can help in any way let me know.

Sorry to hear about that. Kidney stones seems like such a minute thing to be disqualified for, while I know someone who was enlisted even with having been treated for depression in the past. Was that for active duty or reserves? Also, since we are on the subject of medical disqualification does anyone know where I can find a list? A friend of mines is thinking about joining but her LDL is slightly elevated and her Vitamin-D level is low, she's taking medication for the Vitamin-D. Would they disqualify her for that? I told her to contact a recruiter and maybe they'll know.

I don't know where to get a list of conditions but they will waiver untreated elevated cholesterol. It is checked in the lipid panel for the over 40 physical, but I don't think its even tested in the regular physical.

Folks,

I have to tell you that I am still in shock! Back in 2005 after I went for a checkup (after the event) the urologist told me that it was all due to me running in FL weather and not hydrating myself properly. Originally from NY/NJ area, so I had to acclimate myself to running in FL. Unfortunately, the kidney stone was the hard (painful) lesson. But, physically I am tiptop shape. I truly want to serve Active Duty. My Plan B was going into a lucrative private practice in the NY/NJ area. Its actually setup and really not a bad deal. But that is not what I truly want.

I want to fight this. I have done some research on the subject matter. Its stated, "technically possible for the recruiting command of the service you're trying to join to go around MEPS and request a medical waiver from their own medical command. The candidate has to be "EXCEPTIONALLY QUALIFIED" and does that particular branch of service need my particular type".

Lt.Smith if you give me that name of your recruiter I would greatly appreciate it. I actually sent an email to a LTC AMEDD NY recruiter about this and awaiting his reply. I really want guidance on this cause I want to get over this hurdle. The AOC-73a I am seeking candidacy in is understrength. I know its not going to be easy but I have the persistence to see this through and will not stop until it comes from the top.

As I stated in my Motivational Statement, "As a professionally prepared Social Worker I am hoping to seize this opportunity by answering the call of duty per the Wounded Warriors Act of 2007 regarding mental health care needs of the Armed Forces and the shortage of qualified, uniformed mental health professionals".

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank You All.

Check out AR 40-501, 2-10 (I think its gonna be on page 10). I tried to cut and paste the link but it didnt work. Maybe that will help somewhat (and if it doesnt, I am sure history of nephrolithiasis is in there some where...) Good luck and God bless!

Strange....

awww fellow social worker. :cry::cry:

Fight it. You are definatly doing the right thing by going to another recruiter. That is such a small thing to get denied for. I am surprised your recruiter didn't send a waiver and try. Keep us updated.
