You can't blame people for saving themselves when they couldn't help others. It is a shame that these workers will most likely suffer from PTSD for the remainder of their lives when they did all that was humanly possible to save their patients.

wow that was sad, I don't know what I would do in that situation I'm just wondering why we are not doing more to help Japan.

Japan's culture does not view death as the end of everything - they do have a strong belief in the after-life. Studies have shown that people with a strong religious belief have less PTSD.
That said, Japan is a wealthy nation. They are not wanting for food/clothes but rather they want due to the unavailability of people to get close to the reactor site. They need our prayers. However, would seriously doubt they need additional people.

What would I do? I'd run for the roof. I care for people, but I am not going to sacrifice myself. If I am alive in the end, then I can help more people. If I were to die trying to be heroic, no one would benefit.

I would go to Japan tomorrow to help out if there was an organization that wanted newly licensed nurses to come help, but instead we are turned away and told we don't have enough experience.

You would not know what you would do until you were in this situation. Sad stuff.

My heart breaks for these people. What a horrible choice to have to make.

I would do my best. It kind of puts missing lunch in perspective, thanks for posting.

One of my former employer's plan of action for earthquake was to run outside & to help w/recovery afterward.
