I was just curious if everyone is finding jobs? I personally only applied for one hospital as there are 4 within 30 miles from me, but the one I applied for is the closest. Everyone in my class including myself started applying in January and most of us interviewed in Feb. I haven't got a call yet but they said they would be calling this week....I am crossing my fingers!!!
Anyhow I know that everyone around here is pretty much not having a problem but I didn't know what it was like in other areas.
Whats the pay like?
benifits?
reimbursements?
The position I applied for actually is on the lower end of the pay scale, but the benefits and reimbursement outway what the other hospitals offer. So what factors did you calculate when finding your first job as an GN.
I was just told that I was hired at the hospital here in town! I only applied there, but I have a scholarship/loan with them, and the VA whom I haven't heard from. I didn't realize the job market was so bad - the "rankings" for nurses puts NC in the top 5 for needing more...
I applied at the VA here in PA, was told there is a hiring freeze, not sure if its the same for your area or not, but just a little fyi, it's not just you!
No jobs in massachusetts or connecticut. Of all of my 75 classmates in MA only a handfull have jobs, those who do have jobs are moving out of the north east, i may end up being one of them if this dosn't change. I have applied to four hosptials in CT and not so much a nibble. 2 hosptials in MA that i would apply to aren't even posting to external applicants yet. One hosptial responded through email that they will have priority to their Student nurses and will get back to me with their availablity (in a month!) I am just trying to get into med-surg, I didn't think it would be soo hard!
It's just as bad in my area as well. I've been on 2 interviews and been turned down for both. This was at the same hospital, who btw, has a loan forgiveness program with the school I am graduating from.
I've put in 5 other applications and even applied at a Pysch center. It's really tough because in my area hiring for new grads have declined 50% from last year. So we are also competing with experienced nurses for positions, which the experienced nurses will get over new grads.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If I don't get nothing by the end of May, I'm gonna consider going back to the corporate world.
Just wanted to update since I started the thread! I just got offered a position today, which was weird since it was a sunday...But I accepted the position...I applied and interviewed at 3 out of 4 hospitals in the surrounding area all of which were supposedly hiring...The first one I interview on Feb 11, and that was the hospital that was the closest to home and originally my first choice...Well I didn't get the job, although pretty much everyone else I know did...Don't know what happened there. It took a month and half for them to call and decline to offer me the position, and in the mean time I started applying to the hospitals in another area...I finally got an interview, and participated in a share day, but this past tuesday they called and told me the position had been filled. I was devistated to say the least..So that afternoon I called another hospital to find out if they were still hiring grad nurses, which they were, and she asked me if I would like to set up an interview for friday morning at 8am..I decided to redo my resume, and up my references for this position as the only other hospital in the area was not hiring so I felt this was my last shot getting on at a hospital. Well much to my surprise this hospital was awesome and the people there were great. Anyhow I got a call this afternoon offering me the position and I took it. I also found out that they are doing a loan repayment program and tuition reimbursement...All of which are awesome....anyhow just wanted to share my fantastic news with everyone....
If you are still looking for jobs, good luck the market is tight but if you put yourself out there and keep looking you will find something eventually...Don't rule out anywhere, because you may end up looking over a great opportunity...Good luck to you all....
Congratulations!!!! I'm thrilled for you! I'm also glad you started this thread - it's frustrating to not be in the potential job market we certainly expected after graduation and hey who better to lean on than those in the same predicament. Good luck at your new job - god knew exactly where he was going to put you - it's just hard for us to have patience........:)
Yes, wait till you hear my story. I was offered a position at the Mayo Clinic in August 2008. I was given a start date in June. I started filling out the paperwork to start the job and my husband and I recently just quit both our jobs in preparation of leaving for my new exciting job! I got a call about a week ago from Mayo. They are resending all job offers. Now we are both unemployed and graduating in less than a month. Too late to sign up for Grad school; and my hospital is on a hiring freeze and won't hire me back to my position even though I'm not done working until the beginning of May. I'm scared now; I did not realize companies could do this to people. My plans and dreams are ruined. I've never been so depressed. How can I make sure that the next job offer I get does not turn out the same way?????
