3 males out of a class of 30, anyone else feel overpowered?

Nursing Students Male Students

Hey all, I'm 1 of 3 males out of a cohort of 30. I constantly feel like my opinion is unappreciated, that I'm overpowered, and that women, when they're together, are complete and utter *******. It even seems like the female teachers look down upon the men. We're not gay, we hardly even talk, but when we do we get shot down.

Any other males feel this way? No offense to women, it's just how I feel....

You've gotta cut me some slack. I was in the zone, shooting from the hip. My point's still valid.

I'm one of six men in a class of 33, and I can say it's been an interesting experience.

As a middle-aged white male, I've spent a lifetime being a part of "the majority", and taking for granted that the majority opinion usually coincides with my own. But in nursing school, I'm part of a minority group (white males), and it's given me an appreciation for how women and minorities are treated everyday in society. It's been a good life lesson.

Just kidding...

You do have a good point here.

To add...

I think I've learned a lot from the female nurses I've worked with. Compassion for one...Obviously men are wired differently than women. We look for problems, zero in and create solutions...we look for the fix. I think women focus more on the effects of a problem..."How does that make you feel?" ... emotional aspects are more important than the fix.

For me, a male in nursing, the lessons I have learned from the other side are invaluable; and I'm still learning.

As an example...I worked pre-hospital where a violent patient got a knee in the chest, 4-point leather restraints and handed over to the police. I am man! Do not challenge me!

For comparison: I've personally watched a 5 foot nothing ER nurse calm a 250lb gorilla threatening to kill everyone in the department. She spoke in a very low tone, with caring, compassion, however with authority. How'd she do that?

So...are they different? Yeah.

Are we a minority? Yeah.

Is it tough dealing with women sometimes? Yeah.

Can we do this job without them? Not a chance.

My 2 cents :twocents:

PS Can you imagine what they think of us? A bunch of hairy mongrels telling fart jokes and now in charge of people's lives. :nuke:

as for me i enjoy seeing a male face, and after 2 years sitting in class with them they become sexy and attractive.

your school definately has issues, but if you feel as though you are being singled out, take it up with the Dean!.

keep us posted as to how school is going for you.

The only difference I've noticed so far is the men squirming more during the male catheterization video. It looked so painful!

So just to make sure that I'm reading you right, your walked into a room full of future nurses and wondered were are all of guys?! Please tell me that no one told you that nursing was going to be a bunch of dudes sitting around telling fart jokes. Come on man, we knew what we were getting into. If someone is giving you a hard time, suck it up! It's a couple of years, and then you'll be doin your thing.

Hang in there,

Keith

Fart jokes and inappropriate scratching would be a welcome change of pace compared to some of the conversations I've had now that the female nursing students are comfortable around me. While men tend to be crass more often, female nurses and nursing students take it to a whole other level! I wouldn't trade the experience for anything in the world!

1 male in a class of 18. lets say some days its ok. somedays the constant bickering gets annoying. clinical is interesting tho. myself and 5 other students. on a floor where im usually the only male. its not to bad. instructor does think i can have the most clients while everyone has 1 and there not heavy ones. o well.

I'm sure it seems like you're being picked on now, but think big picture. We all have to take "+" or "-" five patients in the field. This will help you feel more prepared. It's good to take advantage of difficult situations while you have someone looking over you shoulder. Soon we will be expected to do this full speed, full load, without guidance. You're gonna be better for it!

I'm in nursing school now (in the first semester of my program with clinicals coming up soon) and I haven't had any problems as of yet. I realize that yes I am a minority and sometimes I will not always agree with the opinions of my peers but if I want to have my opinions heard then I need to speak up and be ready to explain why I feel the way I do. I also don't have many issues with getting along with my female classmates although there are a few who need to keep their ears open and mouth shut more often. I've found that if I really have a problem with someone and there is no way to be able to work together (even if we don't get along) then confronting the issue directly works best. When you speak to them explain exactly what the issue is as directly but professionally as possible and if this doesn't work then avoid this person at all costs. Good luck and try to make peace with your female counterparts!

I'm one of six guys in my class of 36, which I understand is an usually high saturation of testosterone for a class at my school as well as in general.

I don't think any one of us six has any issues with the women in the class, and I certainly haven't picked up any negative vibes flowing the other way, either. The most they do is occasionally comment on how dapper and stylish we look in our white scrubs. We've been referred to as the Team of Mr. Cleans.

hey guys,

I was 1 out of 28 students in my class.. and only 1 of 14 who actually made it through the program...

I had fun with these girls and now all are like my sisters.. but if i was single in nursing school I think i would have had more fun. lol

I occasionally got teased, but all was for fun and usually a good laugh.. i say jsut roll with the punches and get through school.. the other students are not why you are there!

And good luck with nursing school and the NCLEX.. definitely the hardest thing I EVER had to do in my life was nursing school and taking the NCLEX.
