Hey all, I'm 1 of 3 males out of a cohort of 30. I constantly feel like my opinion is unappreciated, that I'm overpowered, and that women, when they're together, are complete and utter *******. It even seems like the female teachers look down upon the men. We're not gay, we hardly even talk, but when we do we get shot down.
Any other males feel this way? No offense to women, it's just how I feel....
where you takin ur classes? hows it going? .im at ttc mcminnville. bout 2 take finals in a&p, med surg, fundamentals & med admin.our class is mixed fairly well, most ladies r 25-40 but 2 r 17!! theres a little drama but most of us get along great. there are a bunch of cna's as well.it's nice havin a few guys around, cant imagine being the lone male.:typing study hard and enjoy.
you are not alone! I am a student on a BNSc program in a nigerian university but unlike you i dont feel overpowered at all although i'm one of the 11 males in a class of 49. I'm the class rep and the president of the entire students in the department which has about 40 males out of the over 450 students. my opinion is well respected cos I've distinguished myself
I have found in my pre-req nursing courses that as a male I am outnumbered, but you should always consider them your peers and collegues. I have never really had a problem with the exception of a few sexist remarks when it comes to lifiting a heavy pt., but when these comments are made I make sure that I let the female nurses know that they are just as capable as I am and if they are not mabye they should not be nurses. I say this in jest it they usually get the point.
Remember, nursing has traditionally been a female dominated profession, but that in now way ever will justify any sexist remarks by the other female students.
Overall though, I have had a positive response to my presence in nursing.
So far, everyone headed for nursing here is on pretty equal footing. It's interesting to swap stories about how we got here, especially us..."older" students.
I've noticed that the women tend to have a bit of extra respect for the men, as we are not only a severe minority, but are also expressing compassion by choosing this career; rumor has it that compassion is something women see as a good thing in a man!

Well, I guess I do not feel bad. We have 10 guys and 27 ladies. We are the only class with so many men. I have however found it harder to be 41 and male in a class of 20ish year old women. Some call me Dad as I am the age of their fathers. Ewwww.
I too notice the biases toward women in nursing. I hear the "If it was easy, then men would be nurses too" comments all the time from staff and nursing association speakers. We just need to quietly remind them that we are more than just a strong back to lift obese patients.
Well, I am new here, and look forward to reading more.
