Male Nurses that lift weights and stay fit

Published

Anyone else out there a dedicated gym head that is also a nurse. get at me.

Specializes in RN.

Running background. Started hitting the weights in January and have seen some progress. Now that the weather is nice I go for my run of 2-4 miles, then stop at the local playground and use the monkey bars for dips X100, pushups X100-200, and pullups X 80-100, each in sets of 10 with 15-25 secs rest in between, Or I will make a circuit out of them. I like this because i HATE working out indoors, and I do not want to bulk up anymore, just define and stay strong.

Hey guies looking for some advice here. I'm 40 and just starting nursing school this fall '11. I am 5'9" 272lbs (just got my mandatory physical) and very sedentary as most of my spare time now is sitting infront of the pc or drawing. Now, WAY back in the day I wrestled for 4yrs in highschool and worked out alot then, but even then i was between 160-170lbs, I have never been "small" if you will. And now I am searching for some advice on getting back into shape, slowly. Also, important to note, i am currently unemployed, uninsured, but I am very fortunate to have a loving and supporting family that will back me up on most anything I do (especially if it will get me out of their house and into my own asap :D)

So, again, I am looking for some advice for a routine that a 40 yr old, overweight male can do at home. I dont have lots of $ to go throwing around, but I also believe its willpower more than $ that will get you in shape.

My main concerns are 1) boredome, need some variety in the routine. 2) potential self injury, i'm no where near as young as i use to be, and as I said, I'm very much out of shape atm. Also dont think the ladies staffing the nursing school would have much sympathy for me trying to call out because I pulled something and can barley move, etc, etc. 3) I start nursing school in about 4 weeks so I would like to start building the "habit" of working out now.

I have done some searching on the web and there are 1 million and 1 websites for working out, and 2x as many that will build you muscle "in record time" as well as "add 6inches to your member" if you just send them your credit card number now... Could anyone recomend a site, or a "routine" heck, even a XL worksheet for tracking your daily work out, ill take any advice at the moment.

Well, thanks for listening, I have to go do a 1mile walk now, trying to do that 1-2 times a day everyday, get my fat butt out from infront of the pc when the weather permits.

See you in school soon

icarr757 the easiest way to start dropping the pounds is get rid all the junk food in the house (chips, dips, sodas including gatorade also white bread, buns, muffins etc) and than only eat the recommended serving size for the foods you do eat. Start walking and build from that, good luck it can be done but takes time "do not rush!" a good site is scoobys workshop just google it

Hey guys, I used to be an light runner and weight lifter. And then I restarted school for my RN. I work as a CNA and I used to work out about 2hrs after work everyday it was AWESOME! But now I'm pulling 3 12hr shifts and 16 creds of school per semester. I'm so exhausted I'm having trouble getting back in my grove. You guys have any words of encouragement to get my ass back in gear?

That would be me!!!!

Love cycling, I do at least 100 miles a week. Also try and get to the gym 4 nights a week, 5 day split (whatever is missed one week will start off the next week). I also crank out 45 minutes on the treadmill on gym days. I shouldn't miss a beat once school starts in September as I'll be leaving a 50 hr a week job for 20 hours of school. That'll leave 30 hrs for studying. Of course that's only until my savings runs out and I need a part time job!

I starting working out this semester three times a week by taking weightlifting class at the city college where I am completing my pre-reqs. I start nursing school in January and wanted to be in the best shape I can be for the coming work... I've never felt better and lost 15 pounds and feel healthy... I am glad to see others here who are committing to a healthy lifestyle!

i already lost 10 lbs since I started my RN program last month. I think its the junk food that I used to eat in my last job, now I only eat sandwiches and fruits at school.

I'm about to apply to nursing school, but I've been a cna for 2 years. I had aspiration of stepping on a bodybuilding stage. I still train like a bodybuilder but due to school haven't been able to be as dedicated as I wanna be. I will be coasting till I graduate nursing school, God willing.

I am a woman but I've recent gotten into serious lifting and clean eating. I need to eat every 3 hours but working 12 hour shifts in the ICU I think it will be impossible. Does anyone have any tips of how to eat this often when we are sooo busy? HELP.

I'm a woman too but noticed that since strength training work is much easier.

I need to get back into shape went from 180 to 240. AND have been at 240 for the longest time. I am hoping to start getting up at 5:30 am and jog every day this summer before my class.
