10 major things an old grad should know

Shame on you. That poor nurse was just trying to get some pointers. BUT, here are a few kernels of knowledge from me. I'm too tired to list ten...

1. Good shoes don't make a difference anymore.

2. Varicose veins look good with support hose. Really.

3. Administration will one day appreciate our worth by offering

commensurate raises in pay. (uh-huh, sure.)

4. It is possible to live with chronic low back pain.

That's it for now. When I wake up and think of some more I'll be back.:)

1. Try and look at the whole doughnut, not just the hole..

2. Consciously remind yourself why you became a nurse...

3. Remember when you were physically the "unit star"...

4. Help our young, don't eat them...

5. Your years of experience and wisdom are irreplaceable..

share your insights...

6. Be as kind to yourself, as you are to your patients and peers...

Kindness fills the heart with joy!

7. Nuture your sense of humor... at times, that alone will maintain your survival...

8. Stay current - read journals, join local nurse groups...

9. There are many who are threatened by your knowledge -pity them!

10. Write a book - no one will believe it...

Remember that you were once a new nurse! I don't believe any of the old nurses popped out of the womb knowing everything about nursing (so stop acting like it) and have pitty for the less experienced :)

1. Everyone was new once. Share a little insight.

2. Nancy New Nurse will fall on her butt at least once on her own, don't push.

3. Never ever ever discuss salaries even hypothetically. Someone will get his feelings hurt.

4. You DID go to school to give baths, push bedpans, and be on the poop patrol. Quit your *****in and glove up.

5. Don't complain about administration, the pay, the workload, etc. We need to retain nurses, not scare them away.

See, we can all just get along. But I still like the saying "Don't you hate it when you know all the answers but no one will ask you the questions"

I'll add the Serenity Prayer as my 'list' of things an old grad should know.... as I chanted this quietly to myself everyday of work ......

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference"... only 3 but they're biggies!!

Also one thing my dear mama taught me as a child..."Not everyone's gonna like you out there but don't let that stop you from doing the right thing."

OK, I'll quit at four...LOL!

That's great mattsmom! But the serenity prayer for nurses I heard was God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to be able to hide the bodies of the doctors that pushed me too far today somewhere where they won't be found...:)

1) eating new nurses and each other is not good for the digestion.........there is not enough prilosec and nexium to go around.........

2) we ain't in for the $$$$$, that is for sure.........i could flip a burger with the best of them.........well maybe not.........

3) a nurse is a nurse is a nurse............

4) whites, greys, cartoony, pink and purple pookadotted what does it matter........

5) we can all be bbbbbb..............just try not to make it a habit.........

and to end.............

ALWAYS KNOW THAT YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE.................
