How are things different in your area because of the latest rise to Orange alert? Are you getting patients in the ER's because of concern over beef? How are you personally dealing with the Orange alert?

Things look pretty normal here in Tucson. I don't care what's happening in the ED because I've got four days off. I had a lovely veal dinner with my beautiful wife for Chrismas Eve and she's cooking a roast tonight (it smells fabulous and I can hardly wait to eat!). We flew from Detroit to Las Vegas in October '01. We will live our lives the way we always have, but remain constantly vigilant. God Bless to all and Merry Christmas.

You know, I used to worry about things like these, and it's just not worth the cost to my mental health. I figure there are people who are paid to worry about all of the potential threats to life and limb......and I'm not one of them.

Nothing has changed here. I still plan to fly on Sunday. I just hope the lines at the airport won't be over 2 hours long since I am leaving on the first flight of the day, and I have to be at the airport at 0500!

Yikes!!!! Prions!!!!! Have you ever seen a picture of one of those nasty proteins? They look like some sort of mechanical being. Some people question if they are even alive. It boggles my mind that a just a PROTEIN can wreak such havoc. I will still eat beef though.

I will eat beef, fly, go to the mall and pretty much ignore the warnings. I believe they want to keep us scared, it takes the focus off what a horrible adminstration this is.:angryfire

In fact, I've dubbed my homemade chili (one of my husband's favorite things) "Mad Cow Orange Alert Chili"...
As nurses we come in contact with the garden variety of infectious diseases...Hepatitis, HIV, etc... Mad cow disease is the least of my worries. I'm quite sure that the terrorists won't be knocking on my door anytime soon either. I'm a generic, middle class suburbanite! LOL

Mad Cow /Crutzfelt-Jacobs syndrome in humans has already been in the U.S. . I cared for a patient, in Michigan, who died of it!
I talked with another nurse who had also cared for a patient in a nursing home, who died of it. I talked with the health department about it and I was told in 1996 they had 9 reported cases of it ,in that county in Michigan......!!!!! It's been around awhile......but they have hushed it up!

I totally trust the beef industry and the government to set aside monetary concerns to keep us safe and informed. :rotfl: :wink2:
