LPN to RN what is your motivation?

Published

Hello,

I have been an LPN for 10 yrs. and have been in school for sometime off and on, working on my RN. As I continue to work, being faced with demands of nursing; I sometimes consider throwing in the towel. As I go on in my day to day duties, sometime patients, Management and undesirable coworkers can just suck the life right out of me. Leaving me bitter and drained. There is a restless spirit in me that just cannot have any peace. I left bedside nursing twice and each time I missed patient care. Currently I am on my last few classes and I am academically ready for an ADN or BSN program. Do I really want to go through all the trials of a nursing program again. Care plans, clinicals, sleepless nights ect. I am trying to keep in mind all the good I do as a professional, I am reminded that I really do try to make an impact on the lives of those in my care. I so badly want to be at peace and be reminded of the reason I became a nurse, " a calling" I don't hear those words to often these days. But, really that is the only reason I have been able to continue.

To those of you that may struggle with this issue, what is your motivation?

The dollar signs motivate me. While the LPN role is not quite the same as the RN, both types of nurses are carrying out similar tasks and experiencing similar stressors at the workplace. Hence, we might as well earn what the RN earns.

I hope nobody berates me for revealing the fact that money is a motivation, because I am not a martyr who arrives to work for free.

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I agree with Commuter. I can appreciate the extra responsibilities RNs have now that I'm continuing on but I still have to say that the LPN does almost the same work for not nearly the money.

With my RN I will also have more opportunities in different areas of nursing. I will probably end up working toward my MSN so I can eventually teach when my back wears out. :)

This is another reason for my pursuit of the RN licensure. I do not want to remain "trapped" in the realm of nursing homes, rehab, and other specialties that are traditionally staffed with LPNs/LVNs. I want more opportunities available to me.

The $$$ would be the main reason to pursue RN status. My kids would be my motivation.I'm really not in the same postion of many other LVN's out there I'm not doing the same work as the RN's and getting paid half the money. I am a day program nurse consultant for adults with disabilities. Not alot of hands on but I love my JOB.

Specializes in GYN, Ambulatory Care, Geri Care.

Hello All!

I am currently working on my RN thru Excelsior college for the past few months now. My motivation is the better job oppurtunities avail to RN's and the the better pay. I live in NY and things are getting more expensive daily. I need a BETTER paying job. Plus my current position as an LPN in a clinic is really hard. Terrible mngt, benefits etc.

Thanks!

my personal motivation is doing the same job and sometimes more then the RN and getting paid less. Where I attend school the students in the RN ASN program only go for one more semester. And make 10 more dollars a hour. You are almost there, keep your head up and you will make it. Do it while you are in the mood, if not you might regret it. After all, a lot of places are cutting LPN positions and hiring RN's. Knock out those doors that were built and install some wide barn doors. Expand your knowledge and hiring field. I personally am finshing up my LPN's at this moment, one more semester. I too will be facing the fact of cutting back on hours and returning to school. I know just the simple fact of cutting hours and decresing the income to go back to school is the hard part. :twocents:

Hey at least you are honest! ;) I think those who say money is not a motivator is either lying or independently wealthy. :twocents:

Expanding job opportunities and ,of course, "the Benjamin". I also get lots of pressure (encouragement) from my employer.

More opportunities. I work @ a nursing home and I do love it.BUT....i stay here because this is where LVNs get paid the most. I want to get my RN so i can choose whatever i want to do!

Funny that I should stumble upon this thread...I have been a LPN for 11 yrs and I am getting ready to go back for my RN. I am trying to psych myself for school again...ugh, the thought of it stresses me out! I want the money of course , but I also want the FREEDOM to choose where I want to work. I am VERY lucky to be working as a LPN in a local ER (I am the only one) and have no plans to leave after I become an RN but I would love to do forensic nursing and I know that will never be possible if I don't get my RN. Also, I am so tired of explaining why I went for LPN in the first place and listening to all of the RN's respectfuly telling me to go back to school. I know it is time...my research of schools is coming to an end...wish me luck...I'm ready to take the plunge! Good luck "fuerza757", it is time to move forward with your education...U CAN DO IT!:rckn:

I'm doing it for $$$ and for the expanded opportunities.
