LPN to RN what is your motivation?

Published

Hello,

I have been an LPN for 10 yrs. and have been in school for sometime off and on, working on my RN. As I continue to work, being faced with demands of nursing; I sometimes consider throwing in the towel. As I go on in my day to day duties, sometime patients, Management and undesirable coworkers can just suck the life right out of me. Leaving me bitter and drained. There is a restless spirit in me that just cannot have any peace. I left bedside nursing twice and each time I missed patient care. Currently I am on my last few classes and I am academically ready for an ADN or BSN program. Do I really want to go through all the trials of a nursing program again. Care plans, clinicals, sleepless nights ect. I am trying to keep in mind all the good I do as a professional, I am reminded that I really do try to make an impact on the lives of those in my care. I so badly want to be at peace and be reminded of the reason I became a nurse, " a calling" I don't hear those words to often these days. But, really that is the only reason I have been able to continue.

To those of you that may struggle with this issue, what is your motivation?

Thanks ER Junkie,

You are so right; over the past week I have contemplated my own motivation. It could not be narrowed down.

Being several...my commitment, The benefits of an income increase, more opportunity, the strain of feeling like my LPN isn't good enough; to hear for the millionth time O' YOUR NOT AN RN, personal advancement, I could go on and on.

I think we need to just do it, go ahead and get ready for all the stress, the nasty instructors, the haters that hope we fail, but most of all, we should look forward to that day of victory, when can join the ranks as an RN..

I sometimes laugh at my hesitation, because, I have worked along side of some of the (to put it nicely) Dumpiest Rn's ever, so as the saying goes, if she can do it I can do it!!!

Go for it!!!!

Even if we follow another path, l know we will be glad we did it.:nurse:

I'm an LPN and we work so hard and arent respected!! of course sometimes RNs arent respected either as far as in the workplace but LPNs are seen as wanabe or pretend nurses, in some peoples eyes if your not an RN you arent a real nurse! whatever!! I want to become a CNS/nurse educator some day and guess what gotta be an RN to get there! there's just no advancement for LPNs in the workplace anymore!

Way to go!!!!:yeah:

That is great.... You are on your way!!!!

As I mentioned before I have been in school for sometime, we just relocated to MI in Oct, so I went ahead and registered for classes and started this semester at Macomb. It's tough going to school twice a week and working full-time, but I am managing.

So for know I am sticking to my plan, I have 50 general courses completed, and have the sciences left to complete. If I choose the BSN I will have a few more misc. classes depending which college I am accepted at. It will be more expensive but, I am really leaning toward the BSN because of the amount to credits I have, plus my long-term goal is to teach, and to so I will need the MSN. Another factor is that I work for the Govn't and it is very hard to advance without the BSN. There is one thing that I found out in my college search, there aren't many LPN-BSN programs here. It doesn't look like I am going to be able to find any part-time programs for the BSN? I guess I will just have to cross the bridge when I get there.

Which college did you choose?

Thanks for the kind words. I too live in macomb county and have been researching online schools. I almost did Excelsior but when I found out that CA and MD won't give you a license if you graduate from there, I decided not to go w/ them. Right now I can't see myself moving to either states but you never know what the future holds and I didn't want to be limited. I went to MCC and they don't offer any bridge program. The closest college that does is OCC and ST. Clair. Then... I ran across Monroe County Community College and found out that they have an online LPN to Rn program that is a year long and there is no waiting list. You can set up your clinicals locally and do your classes on line. It sounds perfect for me...I work 12 hour shifts and have 2 young kids that need me and my husband works nights. A traditional school just seemed like too much of a reach for me right now. I need to knock out A&P (will probably do that at MCC summer course) and one online course w/ MCCC and I can apply for the nursing program that starts this fall. If I want to after that, I can get my BSN online through Indiana State University in 3 semesters. Did you check into that school? A ton of RN's that I work with went with them and did well. That is down the line but I will probably do it if school doesn't kill me along the way. I still have to work so that my job will help me pay for school, plus I love my job and don't plan on going anywhere when I finish. Thats my story...what are you taking at MCC right now? The advisor told me that they had 1600 applicants for their RN program and they only accepted 125 students. THAT IS CRAZY!!! And we wonder why there is a nursing "shortage". (although that doesn't apply to LPN's, right?)

That sounds like a great plan. We are in the same boat, I too have two kids, mine are in middle school, hubby works days too so evening are a better option for me. I love my job also and would love to make this transition, my job is pretty flexible with school schedules. I will check into Monroe, I never heard of it, or St. Clair either??. By the time my transcripts came from the previous University I attended; I could not get any science classes they were all full, so I am taking US history which is a prereq for BSN, it was the only thing open twice a week and in the evening. I am not even considering Macomb program because I think I will have a slim chance of getting in with that many applicants, it is CRAZY, and can be so discouraging for us struggling LPN's. I trying to get in by next yr before my Chemistry expires I took in 05. For ADN I need, according macomb...A &P, Micro and nutrition. I hate that every school has alterations in their prereqs. There should be one standard. At the last school I attended there was no nutrition class but they did require computer. I looked EC too but I wasn't that impressed because some states don't recognize creditials from EC grads. Again...not helping the stortage. Bridge programs would be our best bet. Are the requirements the same at Monroe and St. Clair? Is it part-time??

Indiana recommends you use TCN any thoughts on that?? What do you think?

Thank you, Thank you!!:yeah:

I found the link for Monroe, O my God I am soo excited the program looks perfect. I didn't see any Hesi or Net requirement ?? Do you have this info?

I did see nclex CAT ? is this something different than the regular nclex?

I didn't see Micro either?? Looks like they have A&P I and II ??

Is the college very far from the Sterling Heights area? O my god this may work for me too. See link I found. I can't sit still....LOL

I agree...the pre-reqs should be the same at every bridge program, especially in the same state but it's not. In my research, each one is different. Some require Political Science and no nutrition, etc...I met w/ a rep from TCN and he was great, full of info (although he never mentioned that I couldn't practice in a few states) and wanted me to sign on the bottom line and start that day. They offer you a loan up front (very tempting) w/ a payment plan for 5 yrs. Some people go on Ebay and buy the modules for pennies on the dollar, (TCN is $165.00/credit hr plus you pay anywhere from 80.00-295.00 to clep each test) so it does get pricey. (the cost of the tests are not inc. on your loan). It may be different for BSN but if anything, probably more. You can set up an appt and find everything out though, the rep came to my house and it took an hour. As for St. Clair CC, it is in Port Huron, about 45 minutes away and it is a full time day nsg program, same for OCC. Wayne County CC also has a bridge program and they are in Dearborn. For whatever reason MCC doesn't even offer a bridge program for LPN's. All of them are the same, M-Th or Fri, class all day, clinicals when you set them up. They all last a yr after your pre-reqs are finished. The MCCC program is the same as far as deadlines go, but you can study @ home on your own time and there is no required classroom time. You set up your clinicals locally w/ a preceptor and do your required clinicals and turn in your paperwork when completed. I work at Beaumont and talked to my boss and they said I can do everything there...So...it looks like everything will work out, hopefully. I just need to get into a A&P class stat and get this thing going. When do you plan on taking it?

Hey...I just saw this post after my long-winded reply lol!! I worked a 12 hr shift yesterday and I guess I am still in a fog! I KNOW...it does look great, doesn't it?? The college is far from Sterling Hgts (that's where I live too) ...like over an hour but...when I talked to the nursing advisor, she said there is really no reason for me to have to go there since it is all online and I can take whatever required classes at a local college. Did you call??? I'm so happy you are excited, I was too when I stumbled upon it..!!! Whoo, hoo!!

LOL, that's ok I understand.......

I will be looking at A& P for Summer @ MCC, alot of people don't recommend it, because of the short semester. Registration starts on the 23rd. Are you going to be able to enroll??

How about the Net / Hesi is it a requirement. No I haven't called yet. I wanted to just drive there on my day off.

I wasn't told anything about taking the NET/Hesi for placement in the program and I did not see anything in the handbook that indicated that that was a requirement either. I can't be 100% sure though...I'll look into it more and let you know. Do you know what the summer semester dates are for that class? I would like to enroll at MCC for A&P this summer, but I have a vacation planned from last yr and I hope it doesn't clash with that...I am going to check w/ a few students that I work with and find out how it is and who the instructor is. I'll let you know.
