Yes lpn's are being phased out, that is why I don't understand the nursing shortage, which there isn't one?

LPN's are the backbone of LTC.

I'm pretty sure all those facilities aren't going to have the budget to pay RN's to do treatments and pass meds.

Doctors offices use MA's, but the local ones also have to employ an LPN.

I hear it all the time, but just can't see LPNs being phased out.

This is not true. While many hospitals are now going to all RN staff, there are still an abundance of jobs available for LPNs in the non acute care hospital. Nursing homes, assisted living facilities, Dr.'s offices and clinics, hospice, home health, long term acute care facilities, the list goes on. There is no way healthcare could continue on without using LPNs. Phasing out is definitely a myth. Just take a look at your local job classifieds.

Although LPNs are probably being phased out in your area, the LPN opportunities are very plentiful in my city!

Hell, if they phased out PNs, healthcare in my province would grind to a halt. We are everywhere in the system. Our scope of practice is constantly evolving as are the educational requirements. We have become the diploma nurse that the hospitals used to educate in house.

The only place I can honestly tell you we don't work is NICU.

:nono: Where did you get your information? And, not trying to sound sarcastic, but, I don't understand what you were trying to say from this sentence.

From what I see, some geographical areas are not using LPNs as often in hospitals, but they are certainly used for Drs offices, nursing homes, home care, department of health, corrections, assisted living, insurance companies and such.

10 yrs ago, when I was first majoring in nursing (switched to psychology), I was told that LPN's were being phased out, as were 2-yr RN's. Well, 10 yrs have past, and I still hear people say that, but I'm not buying it anymore. It does seem that LPN's are being phased out of hospital jobs in large metro areas, but you can still find some hospitals that hire LPN's in my area.

LPN's are not being phased out - in fact LPN's are be given more duties to help fill the gap. I started as a MA and went on for my LPN - you are not a Nurse as a MA - and your opportunities are limited as a MA - it was harder to find a job (here in Ohio) as a MA than a Nurse.

get your LPN then decide if you want to go on for your RN - and have somebody else pay for it.

i don't care where you live the lvn position will never be phased out . there is not enough rn's to go around. every ltc in america would shut down if there were no lvn's..... check your info
