Do you wanna be an RN??

Nurses LPN/LVN

Hello nurses

New LPN here, I was wondering how many of you have plans to or are currently pursuing getting your RN license? I would like to but the thought of going back to school right now sounds awwwful lol  maybe I'll wait a year. What are your plans?

Burned out after LPN program .. Had all my pre reqs for RN program .. Waited too long .. They expired ... In a bridge program now and have to do them ALL over again ... Shrugs.. Oh and my 2 kids are living with their dad this time while I complete my RN .. No way I'm doing it again as a single mom ... Want more opportunities ..

I got my LPN about 2 years ago and yes I can agree I am still burned out from school from 2 years ago! I just got accepted into my ADN bridge program and Im not overly excited but at the same time I am ready to move on. It is a May to May program so I can tough it out for a year. Sadly I haven't gained much experience working at my assisted living facility as a third shift LPN but for now it pays my bills and I had a hard time finding a job so thats where Im at now. After my ADN program I plan on doing an online BSN program. I have already been looking at schools even. Maybe even a MSN for me someday but thats a big fat MAYBE lol

WORDS OF WISDOM from ANCIENT LVN/older than dirt elder, so listen up.

And LOL and poor poor pitiful me. I've been LVN for 30yrs. Like most, I went to LVN school because I had kids and could not afford to go to school for more than LVN. Sooooooo after they grew up I got lazy. Kids were gone, so didn't really need that much money. (am not that materialist).

I did take my pre-req's, and darm if didn't let those expire as I just got caught up with work/home.

The ONLY reason I would want to be an RN is for myself. I have worked in those special places most LVN's never go (was a REAL nsg shortage back then) and have been a nurse for so long, and apparently enough of a good nurse that I earn only abt a couple of bucks less than my wonderful RN sisternurses. (and YES I've seen most of payck's around here as I help out in HR)

Problem is I wanna reach out and slap someone when I hear "oh, an LVN"/ (probably in my own mind that I THINK they always say it sarcastically)LOL. REALLY I know it is ME that thinks less of me for being LVN. DON"T BLAST ME. I do not know WHY I think that way, and certainly don't think it abt others who are LVN's. I think it is just a ME thing Probably take a therapist YEARS to figure me out. LOL

But you younger girls, get out there and get it done and over with as soon as you can or you will end up same as I have. YOU DESERVE IT. GO FOR IT!

Been an LPN for a year. Did my prereqs WHILE in the program. JUST got accepted to the ADN bridge program starting May 2013. So excited! :)

I finish my lpn program this sept and I plan on finishing my rn online asap after passing my boards. I already have all of my prereqs to get into a BSN program

I am a new LPN as well. I plan to get my RN. I am wanting to get a stable job and get some things taken care off before I go back. I want to go back to the school i graduated from but they make you retake all of the basic courses. The bridge program I am looking at is part time evenings and it is only two courses a term for one and a half years.

I want to continue because the jobs an LPN can do is getting smaller and smaller and to be able to continue to be a nurse I want to try to stay ahead of the game so I will probably have to get my BSN before to long as well.

Specializes in Wound Care.

You know, I really really wanted to but with the waiting lists being a mile long even for the bridge programs I am really starting to change my mind. I have all my pre-req done and can't see waiting around for another year or 2 crossing my fingers that a spot opens up. I graduate from my LVN program in 3 months. I will do one round of applications for RN school. If I don't get in I'm going to PA school which honestly is probably a better fit for me.

I'm also a Lpn.....about 2yrs......I like what i'm doing.....but its more so paperwork then actually skilled nursing......smdh......thinking about going back to school tho

I'm an LPN student that plans on bridging to RN.

Of course when or even if that happens depends on a lot of course, but that's what I'm planning for the moment.

The last time I was on here though I remember reading a few posts by people who seemed to think bridging like that was somehow disrespectful to the title of LPN. So I kind of feel bad about wanting to do that now.

Why is it disrespectful?

REALLY? Disrespectful! OMG Now that's a new one on me. I can't remotely see how anyone but esp. a nurse (regardless of licensure) would discourage someone from uping their education and status! If someone does, believe you me, THEY have an issue IMO!

I am currently set to take my final for my last class of the RN program. I was able to do the LPN to RN bridge course. I became licensed as an LPN in July 2008. And with the way it looks I'll be a licensed RN close to exactly 5 years after getting my LPN.

I told myself I'd get my LPN, work for a year and go back for the RN. Never happened, things happened..which made it impossible for me to go back when I had planned. No matter, I am here now.

I have always wanted to be an RN. But things worked out a certain way and I ended up going to LPN school, knowing someday I'd go back.

Like the other poster, I feel held back as an LPN. I want to be able to have the autonomy of the RN. I want to be fully responsible for my patients and not have to get the 'ok' from someone else on my plan of action. Around here, the LPN jobs are not what they were when I graduated. Not much out there. Of course now I will hold my ADN, but a large majority of the hosptials in the area want/prefer BSN. so its back to class I go..for my RN to BSN.
