I'm a recent LPN graduate and I would really love to work in Labor & Delivery. Does anyone know of places that offer LPN jobs in L&D? I'm currently in Tennessee and haven't seen any LPN's that work in this area, but I'm about to move to Iowa/Illinois.

Welcome! :)

Did you not research the LPN employment market before enrolling in an LPN program? Due to issues with scope of practice, the vast majority of hospitals in the U.S. no longer hire LPNs into L&D. However, a very small number of facilities utilize LPNs in postpartum.

Currently living in North Florida. Sorry, none of the hospitals around here hire LPN's, no matter the unit. LPN's are usually in long term care facilities around here.

None of the hospitals I have worked in (and I have worked in several different states) utilized LPNs in L&D. As a previous poster mentioned, there are some significant scope of practice issues posed by LPNs in L&D these days.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

I know one facility that utilized LPNs in post partum and when the well baby nursery was opened because of maternal complications during L&D. Never as an L&D nurse due to scope of practice. LPNs are limited to focused and ongoing assessment not initial or comprehensive assessments. LPNs cannot triage. Most states state LPNs cannot do IV push medications. All skills necessary in an L&D setting. L&D isn't just helping catch babies, it's constant and assessment & monitoring of a laboring mother and delivery, possibly assisting with a surgical birth then transfer to postpartum within a few hours of delivery

If you moved to OHIO you could work in L&D hospital, most of the nurses are LPNs and have been for years! [emoji3] I wish you luck on your search!

That's hard for me to believe - do you know of any specific hospitals that hire LPNs into L&D?

My hospital does not hire LPNs at all except for a few clinic positions. Around here most LPNs work home health, long term care and doctors' offices. The job market for LPNs in this area is so bad that my community college nursing school closed its LPN program the year I started.

Holzer medical! I know it was hard to believe at first for me too but the nurses are great there. -- you can also search it on GOOGLE if you need more info.

Specializes in Allergy/ENT, Occ Health, LTC/Skilled.

The ONLY time I have seen LPNs being hired into L&D was when the local air force hospital was wanting to hire them as techs to work in L&D

I wonder if rural hospitals utilize LPNs in L & D.

Specializes in ICU.

Worked as an OB tech in L&D in a rural critical access hospital. We had two lifer LPNs when I started there-they didn't hire any more LPNs and were phasing them out- both were let go from the L&D unit and were offered clinic jobs in the hospital system soon after.
