I'm a new grad RN (adn) applying for ANY, yes ANY, RN job in greater DFW Texas area over last 6 weeks. No, I can't move... family obligations. I'm even applying now to tech jobs, GN jobs, intern, extern, home health, hospitals, hospice, craigslist, and everything I can possibly find... EVERYTHING.
I got one email that told me I was over qualified for a tech job for $12 an hour. At least she was nice to reply w/an email instead of some generic auto-bot responder. I'm in the oldest catch 22, can't get experience because I have none. UGH UGH UGH
I'm at a loss of what to do next. I've passed nclex on first try, I've got the RN degree with great GPA, but can't get a job. I haven't had a single interview. I'm about to be living in my car.. or maybe a relative out-house or something. I just don't know what else to do. I'm so depressed... I've seen this following generic email in my inbox so many times i've lost count....
"We have not yet made a selection for the position for which you applied. However, because we have several applicants whose backgrounds relate more closely to our present requirements, we wish to inform you that we are not considering you further for this position."
How do you like that? They haven't picked their candidate, but they know it's not me, without even as a much of a phone call or interview.
Totally depressed. Lost. Don't know what to do.
I have a question...How do I network and when do I start to do such a thing when I have one semester to go for LPN and NCLEX to pass and I have children I raise alone? I currently reside in Wisconsin but I am going to have to move to Texas ...my son is able to get the special schooling he needs ther for his special needs and my license will carry over there for Texas is the sister state to ...Wisc...a state I hate...too much snow and lacks programs and schools for my son..So how can I network ...when and how?
You have to get REALLY creative. I relocated after graduation too. I begged every person in a medical facility in my 'old' state to check and see if there was anyone that had worked in a facility in me 'new' state. Long story short, one of the nurses I know works with a doctor that used to work at a facility an hour from me. The doc called the hiring manager with a recommendation.
Also you can't be picky about hours. Make it clear to whoever does the hiring that you can work nights, weekends, holidays with no problem.
Ohhh... this is classic,
GOT this in my email box this morning....
"Although your qualifications are impressive, to qualify for a Nurse Extern, you must be actively enrolled as a nursing student. This is not a new nurse graduate position, but rather a student position. Please visit our website for Nurse INTERNSHIP positions."
HAHAHA... The JOKE is on ME because there is NO internship positions. I looked again today and I looked BEFORE applying to the extern job.
What a joke.
So...
I'm overqualified for Tech,
I'm unqualified for RN job (no experience)
I'm ineligible for Extern (not enrolled in school, sorry I graduated)
This leaves GN jobs and Internships... like looking for a needle in a haystack... then if I find the almighty needle, I gotta fight off 100's of other needle seekers to try and keep it.
And yet the schools keep pumping them out. UTA expanded its program hugely last year so there will be even more competition and over-saturation of the local market.
I feel badly that so many are being encouraged to go to nursing school without any warning of what the employment outlook really is.
All the best to you OP. I hope you find something soon.
Are you just turning in your resume online or are you making cover letters specifically for the jobs you are applying to?
I suggest you show up at the place, with your resume and a cover letter that you made specifically for that position, and hand it in in person. It will make you stand out. Even if just a secretary is there, it shows more effort vs. an email.
Then a day or two later, send a thank you note to the recruiter (preferably in the mail) letting them know that you appreciate them taking out time to look at your resume (and meeting you - if applicable), especially since they probably have hundreds to look at. That way you stick in their mind for a few more days.
In the age of computers and non-personal communication, the simple things can make someone stand out.
Good luck to you.
