I am applying for the program at southwest, along with other schools. To be honest I am very concerned with going to a school where i might not be hirable, but at this point in my long academic career, I am just anxious to get in. Anyone with info about this program and if people actually get a job from graduating from here, your info will be helpful.

I think LASC has a bad rep because of the area that it is in. I did not graduate from the nursing program there, but I took most of my science prereqs. I learned so much in these classes. One of my former class mates transfered from there program because she felt that the program did not fulfill her needs. I would suggest checking the pass rate, scheduling an appointment with a counselor and going on campus when school is in session to speak with some of the students to get a good idea of how the students feel about the program. Hospitals are not only going by which school you graduated from. They are looking at, one if you have a license, if you are a good critical thinker, any certs you may have (ACLS, PALS), letters of recommendation and your first impression at the interview.

I would apply to the program and others. Also, look for programs that are in other areas besides LA schools...Goldenwest, in Huntington Beach is a great program :) Good luck with your choices!

Hello, I am a Los Angeles Southwest College Rn graduate 2008 ..It was not my first choice school but the first to have accepted me. I applied to numerous schools. If you want to go to your first choice school then you might be sitting around waiting.People will always have something negative to say about nursing programs..unfair tests, bad teachers, unorganized etc..but it really depends on yourself. As long as you read and understand the material you will be fine. Southwest may not be in a good area but It sure made me an RN today. Understand that the pass rate for nclex reflect those who dont put 100% and probably who cheated their way throught the program. AND...hospitals dont hire based on which school you graduated from, as long as you have your license =) Hope that helps =)

I am planning to take a Saturday anatomy class for prereq at LASC b.c. all the other colleges are completely packed. Well, I'm not enrolled yet but the admissions people said to come 30 minutes before the first day of class, and the professor will most likely let me in. I plan on going an hour early b.c. I desperately need this class.

I don't want to sound disrespectful of people in that area, but I was wondering how dangerous the area is. It's an 8am to 2:30pm class...so it was be during daytime. Also I know professor -------- is popular for anatomy but I will most likely take it with ------. How intense is the anatomy class? I am also a third year full time student at a 4 year university right now. So...yea this year is going to really kick my butt...I'm ready though! Please let me know how your experiences LASC were! Thanks!

All schools are required to disclose any criminal events to students. You can go to lasc.edu and look at the report from last year. Personally, I do not think you will have a problem. Your class is on saturday, early in the morning. Its just my guess, but I would think the only people who are up that early on sat and on campus will be other students. I'm sure they need that just as much as you! You should be safe... I took all night classes and I never had any problems what so ever.

I took my anatomy class there 4 years ago and the professors have changed. I think -------- is teaching the sat class. From what I heard, this person is good. Good luck on getting into the class!

just a reminder, please do not post names of professors.

per the terms of service, under the basic terms of service:

"please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs."

thank you. --------- dianah

Hello,

My advise is to not go to Southwest college. Area has nothing to do with it. Very poor clinical Experience- You learn nothing in clinicals; you just stand around - you have no choice because hospitals in LA don't really want SW students to do much. I think the school remains open..because students are desperate to get into any college. These people will do whatever it takes to graduate ..they will take any job not really aiming for the hospital jobs. Most seniors that I know who graduated since 2008 are not working ..mostly nursing homes etc. A few are still looking for employment in the nursing field. If you go to Southwest college..be prepared to study on your own.

I was a student at southwest college..after my second semester I decided this was a waste of my time. I was not even able to get a job as a student nurse or CNA aid. I was competing with El Camino, harbor students. So I waited my turn on the wating list to get accepted to a decent school and left to start a BSN program.

I know some of you are anxious, but its better to wait to a get into a reputable program. Where you know you will get to reap the rewards of your hard work. I think its easier to graduate with a school like Los angles southwest college..you might get a diploma , but passing the boards and getting a job is another thing. Recently, their passing rate has improved..keep in mind not a lot of students are sitting for the boards..only maybe 10 compared to let;s say el camino who sent 90-100 sudents. So Please don't go by that. Good luck and God Bless.

I totally disagree with this comment from Cali39 Hospitals dont hire based on which school you graduated from, as long as you have your license =) Hope that helps =) May be if you move out of town its ok. But in LA is a tough sell.

I'm enrolled to take my first science course at LASC. Sure it's not the BEST area but just to get into a physiology or microbiology class anywhere in L.A. is hard because they fill up so fast! I kinda feel that way about the nursing program too... I just want to get in ANYWHERE, finish up and get my RN. I had no idea that hospitals care that much about what school you came from...

At LASC I had my clinical rotations at UCLA-Harbor, Kaiser Sunset, and Gardena Hospital ..good clinical experience ..My classmates that I graduated with ended up workin at UCLA Westood, USC,Torrance Memorial, and Huntington Hospital ..

Thanks Cali31, sounds good to me! I plan on meeting with someone soon to make sure I'm on the right track! :)
