LOOK the part?

I know a gal....she has very recently 'changed her look'.

She is a ball to be around...everyone around her is comfortable.

She is a great nurse, full of positive energy, smart, good to the patients.

She magically became a bombshell, very blonde, very big hair, very pink mouth, nails, eyeshadow...

She bought many new pastel uniforms, wears funky shoes.

She rather looks like an ice-cream cone, as a kid in her hospital accurately told her.

The older patients constantly say things like, "are YOU a NURSE"?

Her work remains excellent. Her patients love her. Her coworkers love her.

Hospital admin.......lukewarm at best. She just smiles

Does a nurse really have to LOOK the part?:)

I will always look and dress as a professional at work. I once worked at a hospital that according to dress policy all registered nurses will wear white panty hose. Since im a man I guess thats about stupid!! We are professionals! Act and dress accordingly!

I don't hear any condemnation, except you telling all to chew somewhere else. No chewing intended at all! Just opinions.

I, myself, like to look like I groomed myself in the morning. I enjoy color. Uniforms are CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP! Imagine having to wear dress clothes or suits every day of the week....with shoes to match!

By the way...the 'ice-cream cone' nurse is extremely popular with the patients...just brings a surprised smile and wide eyes upon introductions.:)

Very amusing topic....our outdated (but nice DON) just retired...and uniforms were always an issue...we have a few ''aproved'' tops and can wear any solid that matches.....the aproved tops are UGLY UGLY UGLY....stick people....ugly stick people and heart people...again ugly...and it's not a pediatric unit, it's hospital wide....with no peds in the hosp...there are a few other designs that aren't as bad...but not great either.....none of these could be worn by a male....without getting seriously laughed at....l think aproved attire should be unisex...this enhances professionalism in my oppinion...with some leeway for individuality...l tend to wear solid top and bottom..navey or lt blue or hunter green with BRIGHT solid long sleeve t-shirts under the scrub top...l get a lot of compliments...l don't get any flack from mngmnt...after all the males must wear solid...so l can too....recently we custom ordered very nice long sleeve T's with hosp logo, dept. and some neat medical art work...they look real nice.....l think as long as you look professional and are comfortable that is all that sohuld matter......l'm not sure how professional the ''ice cream cone'' looks.....and very questionable for ms. Media nurse......myconcern is how this affects the image of nursing over-all when nursing is at such a crisis....my .02...LR

As long as her hands are clean, her nails are groomed to a finger-tip level, her clothing is clean, she isn't reeking of a perfume factory, her breath is fresh so when she speaks to the patients she isn't knocking them out with her bad breath, her shoes are clean, her hair is tied back and not falling into the patient's face or the patient's food tray, and she doesn't sneeze on me.......I don't care what she wears.........however..........I do prefer the professional dress attire......either clean scrubs or uniforms......but I have seen so many health care workers come to work in wrinkled and dirty uniforms, and that is a big time turn off to me. :kiss

I've met a nurse like that too!

She was wearing mini skirts and had a fire-red ponytail on the top of her head, with each fingernails painted a different color and a lot of makeup. And that what 10 years ago! (she was ahead of her time!!!) She was THE reference in the cardio-surgery unit. So good with patients, family, collegues, and was respected by everyone, even the doctors!

Professionnalism doesn't come in a uniform. I say wear a MickeyMouse T-Shirt, a mini skirt or a plain hospital green scrub if you want, just know what you do and BE a nurse!!!

One of my employers has a white on white policy, one says navy pants with white top, one says whatever as long as it's scrubs. The best reaction? The seniors in LTC ALWAYS check out what color I'm wearing today and comment on it, they love the deep jewel tones I wear. I think some patients enjoy seeing the colors and prints.

l.rae, zebra striped undies under the whites...LMAO!!! Reminds me of the time, in my younger years, the residents at the hospital threw a kicka$$ party, and my girlfriend and I went from the party to my house, freshened up a bit, and went to work at 7am. I didn't have any clean uniforms, so I put on an older white pantsuit, forgot all about the zebra striped bikini undies I was wearing from the night before....LOL!!! Kept wondering why all the guys were checking out my a$$, until one of my co-workers said, Linda, did you know you are wearing..... LOL!!!
