Dear hospitals that won't hire new grads, dear nurses that refuse to retire, dear saturated new grad market, dear nursing schools that keep accepting too many students for the money and not for the need, dear people that still think there is a nursing shortage,
You're making my life miserable.
Sincerely,
A very bitter, worn out, new grad.
So glad I busted my behind to get a 3.7gpa in nursing school, work as a nurse aide for two years, have two other degrees, a preceptorship, and volunteer all for not.
P.S. hospitals: one day you're going to want me and don't think I won't forget who didn't treat me well or wouldn't hire me when it really mattered.
Felt good to get that off my chest!

I really didn't mean that part about nurses who won't retire. I wouldn't retire in this economy either. And they have obviously earned their right to their positions. I just had to mention it because it is a factor in this perfect storm of "no jobs for new grads". There may be some frustration there, but I realize its missed placed frustration in regards to nurses who are staying in the game. Thanks for your thoughts.
I know. Just feeling kinda touchy today I guess. Plus what many of the hospitals are doing is deliberately not hiring replacements in order to eek out as much from the remaining nurses as possible. Sorry for raining on your rant. :)

I LOVE this! Don't apologize! You even said you were venting. I am right there with you! One year after graduating and no work. Unless I want to do home health which my back is not up to. And quite frankly, it's a little too isolated. (yes I did give it a try). Eight years of school....for nada. (the eight years was part time, full time, and even a few semesters off when my sis passed away)

i'm sorry your life is miserable. i'll gladly retire if you'll support me, my husband, the dog and put my step-daughter through college.
i found that remark offensive.

I agree with the OP to a certain extinct. I had made plans to do some travel nursing. I had some family issues that made me change my mind. Family member in hospital twice and one major surgery this year. I am the only child. I decided not to travel because standing by love ones. I continue to work at the same facility. I changed my position. I believed it was one of the best moves I ever made. Because of the economy I wish not to travel at this time. I only received a few travel jobs, and of course I refused. I will continue to keep myself put because where I work I know I am a good worker. I am not bragging because there is a reason for everything. I believe if my family member didnt have surgery I would somewhere traveling and probably be unhappy. This just gave some time to really think about my life and job. Good luck to you.
I am so happy for nurses with jobs. In this economy its tough out there and I am grateful for those of us that have been able to find and retain employment.
Did I really mean what I said about nurses who won't retire, again no, but can't a girl say something stupid out of frustration without people jumping on her Ruby Vee? My best moment...no but I had to get it out. I had my dream job offer rescinded today because apparently someone decided not to retire after all and I'm beyond defeated and full of fear about finding a job after so much hard work and so many sacrifices...

Well I'd be mad at a nurse if they were playing the Brett Favre game.
I mean, if you want to continue working, then more power to you, but don't get to the point where you say you are going to retire or leave or change careers and then your employer interviews your potential replacements, and then you change your mind. That's not right.

I think your frustration is understandable. I took no offense by your retirement comment. Of course these days nobody can retire till their 70 so it may continue to be an issue fpr quite some time.......

I am a new grad also, and I fell for the okey doke of believing that there was an actual nurse shortage, stupid me. I am now resigned to looking for work in another field, maybe I should have gone to law school after all...When it's all said and done, I don't know what else to do to attain employment or where else to go and so I will just keep trucking...
