Lapsed license - advice?

Updated:   Published

So, I got audited for my CEU's last year and spent a lot of time pulling them together, as I had changed jobs twice (my husband is military).

This year, no renewal notice came from the State and my employer doesn't have an auditing department. Having done all that work last year, I guess I just forgot that THIS was the renewal year. Totally accepting responsibility here.

I've gone past the 60 day grace period now.

Went online and downloaded the stuff to re-register, have all my CEU certificates and, of course, the fees.

Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this process. Anyone have words of advice or input?

Feeling enough like a dumb-***, so please save that part of the input. LOL

Thanks, everyone!

Hope not as bad, as when a MDS nurse in, LTC, worked 6months on lapsed lis......

lotta heat to the facility, per CMS, we had to void each MDS she had done, refund Medicare money, and redo MDS by a current Lis. Nurse.....and were then paid at default min. rUG $level.....

this is nurse also worked the floor, gave some meds.....state, didn't sanction, but we had to write incident report on every nurses note she wrote and every medication she gave, We barely scathed OIG....

Eeeks, what poo pile! My LTC HR person emails us 1 month prior, my school would have no clue...

This might help for the future: I put important things like this in my Google calendar with email notifications — everything from CEN to CPEN to RN licensure, ACLS, PALS, BLS, etc. I can't afford to let any of that stuff expire! But I take it as my responsibility — I am not going to count on anyone else to remind me, because they aren't really invested in it as I am and mail can get lost, emails can get caught in spam filters, etc.

It's nice to get renewal notices, but as we are grownups, it's my belief that we are ultimately responsible for renewing our licenses. I can hardly believe there is a state that makes it legal to practice without a license if the adult professional wasn't reminded of their obligation.

I say all this as someone who didn't get her license renewal one time, forgot, and got dinged by her employer. It was only a matter of days, but of course I couldn't work. My boss was decent about it, but I never let that happen again. It was MY fault, and believe you me, lesson learned.

I am SHOCKED that your hospital's credentialing department didnt give you a heads up! When I was supervisor of an ICU before I joined the military we had to verify each of the nurses licenses on the ward that I was responsible for, individually, EVERY MONTH!! That meant I had to take my Staff RN roster, log onto the BON's website, input their license number to verify it was valid and not expired, and PRINT OUT that verification to file. I thought that was a Joint Commission/State Dept requirement also but perhaps not? Anyway, get in contact with the BON asap!! hopefully the military aspect will give you some leeway.

Wow not here! It's all about personal responsibility, if you're responsible enough to have peoples lives in your hands, I'd hope you're responsible enough to remember to renew the literal key to your livelihood!

Check your BON website. Mine says that if I do not receive a renewal notice that I can legally still practice until they send it.

A few years ago, a school nurse near me was discovered practicing with an expired license. She had left the state and come back, so I don't know how long she worked, but when she was found out her license had been expired for 18 months.

I know it's harsh, but that's honestly the way it should be

Not surprised at all (not the nurse, but the school being unaware)

Of course the responsibility to keep current with our licenses/certs lies with us, but I have never worked at a facility that didn't send me multiple reminders as my renewal got close, and they would have tracked me down at home.

This post, prompted me to check my status at my BON, thankful, not till March 2017, so I had better get to work on this cycle of CEUs

I live in IL where we have had no budget for over a year and none on the horizon. We no longer receive any notifications:

No professional license renewal notifications

No drivers license notifications

No car sticker notifications

NOTHING.

In IL, you can't practice without a license - this was our year to renew everything and because the state is closing state offices and laying off workers, we were all told to renew as soon as possible which for us was March (our licenses expire May 31st). IL is not a state to let your license lapse as there are few workers to help you get it reinstated

Holy Mother of All That is Holy!!!! Are you guys planning to remain a state?? Perhaps a word or two on change.org?:writing:
