Langara January 2021 intake

Published

Hey guy! Just starting up this trend for Langara's January 2021 intake! I applied couple weeks ago, just exciting to see what awaits us. Who else has already applied?

@Incising To be honest, I had no idea that the school was planning on changing how they currently evaluate incoming applicants. For as long as I remember (and the nursing admissions page still shows) degree holders were given preference, but it's possible based on the email you've posted that they are considering changing their evaluation process at some point in the coming future. I would take that information with a bit of skepticism until something official is reflected on their website. Never lose hope or give up if this is your passion! If they do make changes I would hope they begin to take aspects other than grades into account since it take so much more than good grades to be a great nurse.

Thanks for being here! I have a question as a student currently finishing his last 2 semesters and planning on applying as a degree holder with a lower than competitive GPA, I emailed the Langara nursing advisor(I attached his response) about preference in acceptance, and was told that they may not give preference to degree holders, is this true? Or a new change perhaps? If so I am so screwed...

I asked the same question you asked. A different advisor gave the same answer as Ben.

@Hewooo Hi there! No problem at all!! For me personally, I found term 4 to be particularly stressful because I was dealing with a lot of anxiety at the time, so certain stressful things I experienced throughout that term felt more stressful than they needed to be. I was on a very busy unit with some very sick patients and there were a lot of challenges I felt I needed to overcome, but having a lot of good support around really helped. Also, some of the courses during the term felt quite disorganized and it added to my stress. Keeping a clear head is so important because you will be more focused and be able to think more clearly. The biggest challenge for a lot of people is to remember that we are students, we will make mistakes, and it is not the end of the world. When we put so much pressure on ourselves to do everything perfectly, it puts enormous pressure on our minds and bodies, and ironically, is when the most mistakes happen.

Most people I talked to found different terms harder than others for different reasons, but your experiences, instructors, and what is going on in life all make an impact.

That makes sense! I'm glad that's over for you:)

Thank you!!

Has anyone else transferred credits to Langara from BCIT? I'm having a bit of a panic because admissions told me they have a different grading scale for BCIT credits, but I can't find any info on it and my emails to the transfer department are not being answered. I got 80% in A+P at BCIT, which they deem an A-, but Langara recorded it at a B+. With A+P being a 6 credit course, it's dropped my GPA quite a bit. I'm worried that the same might happen with the credits I'm transferring from UFV (A- and A, but I'm not sure of the percentages). If anyone has any info on this, it would be so appreciated!

Probably a good question for the school. I know when I applied the colleges I went to all had letter grades, so that is what they gave me on the Langara application. An "A" at Douglas should be an "A" at Langara unless I'm mistaken.

That's what I understood as well. I've tried contacting the school - calling the registrars office, emailing the transfers department multiple times. I can't get an answer from them, so I was hoping someone else would have the information.

anyone know why does nursing program charge 220$ for parking at college in the tuition but not other programs?

Does that means we can park at college without paying hourly rates?

Hey there, I am assuming you used the Cost of Study tool to get the numbers. Not everything listed on there is a required cost and not all the estimates are accurate. Parking is definitely not a required cost if you take transit to school and clinical. Even if you do need parking, Langara does not have a parking pass and the rates at the clinical sites differ. Currently, there is free parking at Langara and at hospitals due to the pandemic but that may change.

The nursing program will not charge you all the costs listed in the estimate. The only costs the college requires you to pay are the tuition, student fees, ATI, criminal records check, at least one set of scrubs ($80), and up-to-date first aid (SFA, BLS). Stuff like textbooks and travel costs are all flexible. Like who the heck would spend $285 "Duplicating and Copying"??? Haha

There used to be a mandatory UPASS fee; not sure if that is still a thing.   Parking is pay as you go---1/2 day rates.     No parking passes are available.    You can park on Main Street and walk 3 or 4 blocks.    There's also parking on Ontario Street farther down the hill by the golf course.

No college would have a mandatory parking fee---because not everyone has a car!

Thankyou Hewooo!

Due to the visa situation and Langara not accepting international students I am now considering University Of Alberta. I will begin my pre reqs with Athabasca or Macewan in October :-)

Good Luck to everyone!
