What do you mean? You wouldn't send home the afebrile kid with a runny nose that they're CERTAIN has strep? Or the kid with dandruff they're CERTAIN has head lice despite your having checked him for the 3rd time this week.

I had a lousy day myself today, d/t teachers second guessing my activities in the clinic. I ended up taking it up with my principal, because one individual involved was getting nasty, and I have no tolerance for harassment/lateral aggression. At least he came through for me.

Hope tomorrow is a better day for you.

I know what you mean. I hate when kids come to the clinic and say "My teacher says I need to go home, I have a fever." I just take their temp and send them back to class with a note that says "Julio's temp is 97.5." Here's a news flash teachers: you no longer have to feel their forehead to know if they have a fever. We have these new-fangled battery-operated doo-dads in the clinic which will tell us automatically if there is a fever.

What I really love is the ones who come to the clinic because they need to go to the bathroom. Not sick, just don't like the bathroom in their pod. My clinic is completely on the other end of the school from classrooms, nearly 1/4 mile away. EVERY student must pass at least one restroom just to get to the clinic. Don't ask me why they did it that way...)

i feel your pain ! hehe :lol2:

how about the teachers who walk past the clinic, see a student in the chairs and has to make a comment "oh you poor thing, you look terrible". and the student was only waiting for me to get bandaids for the classroom teacher. 15 minutes later he is back in the clinic saying that he feels bad !!! :banghead:

how about the teachers who bypass the nurse altogether and call the parents of a student from the classroom. then they send them to the clinic all packed up and ready to go home. all of this, without my knowledge.

thanks for letting me vent here too ! it feels soooooo good !! :heartbeat

Amen! I have all these issues too. Its nice to hear common problems!

Oh....I am loving this. I can so sympathize. I love working with the kids. But the staff drives me crazy!!!

My clinic is connected to the front office so they use it as an entrance/exit and give kids medical advice, etc. while they are passing through.

If they wanted to be the school nurse so bad - why did they get a teaching degree?????

Oh, I know why.Because as a teacher they get 2 planning periods, they eat lunch daily, they take bathroom breaks and they actually get acknowledged on teacher appreciation week!!! And on top of that - they can even walk down the hallway without somebody stopping to ask what happened to the kid they sent down to the clinic 3 days ago or have a mole inspected!!!

Oh wow that's funny! My office is connected to our main office as well. How do you handle privacy issues? Everyone sees and hears everything!

It is a struggle. I have tried student / staff education, signs, privacy screens (which staff usually just knock down to get through). Everyone thinks it seems to be a hallway or something. A few of the teachers are really bad. I think I will just walk through their classrooms while they are teaching one day and start talking to kids. When they ask what I am doing, I think I'll say........"well, what is good for the goose is good for the gander."

Of all the children who have come to me over the past 9 years saying "my teacher says my head feels warm" I don't think a single one has ever had a fever. It drives me nuts!!

Agreed on the foolishness and frustration of teachers trying to practice nursing without a license... :banghead:

however I thought this was going to be a thread about students and ventilators....

LOL, I need to get out of my office more often

Wow, it's so good to hear from other nurses with the same problems I face. My office is right behind the front desk, so privacy at a premium. I hear you and relate to everything you all have said from lunches, to teachers practicing medicine. What about teacher's kids? Is it just me, or are they the neediest kids in the school?:nurse:
