ha! i had one just a couple weeks ago try that. brought her vomiting 12yo to school--been throwing up since 5am. mom brought her into the clinic and asked if the child could stay there for awhile. i took the child's temp--99.4--and reminded her that the policy if a child vomits twice in school they have to go home. mom assured me the vomiting was over even though the child was literally green and it was...for about 4-1/2 minutes. i waited for the second vomit 6 minutes later, then called the principal to let her know that mrs. so-and-so's daughter was sick & needed to go home.
"bless her heart, little vicky keeps throwing up, she has to go home!"
theeeeennn i notified the teacher/mom. she immediately tried to pull the old "i'm a teacher, i can't leave" card. tough cookies, sista. i'm on top of it--i"ve already called your principal and they're looking for coverage now. mrs. so-and-so wasn't entirely happy, but too bad, you shoulda kept her home. sucks to be you.
I've worked elementary, jr. high, & am currently in a high school. Try smiling thru the "know it all teens" who strut in & inform me that they texted mom(no cells allowed on in school!) & she's on her way to check them out!! Talk about no need for a nurse--just a secretary to check them out cause they "don't wanna be at school today" & mom comes running.

At a recent school nurse conference- someone reported the same problem. Another nurse has a system- you have to see the nurse before you sign out sick. Period, or you don't get to sign out. However, she is IN the office. LOL
My goal in working with the high school is to:
Of course, this doesn't work if the student makes contact with the parent before seeing you. But if the above system becomes routine, then the parents will start asking "what does the nurse say".
There are going to be parents that will cater to their kids, but those problems are bigger than missing one more day of school.
